Snake Eyes First Look Delivers Samurai Swords and G.I. Joe Flavor

It took a while for Hollywood to “Go Joe!” again, but Paramount is finally set to bring the franchise back to the big screen with Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins, which has received a first look in new images and a poster. The film is a prequel movie of sorts that tells the story of popular character Snake Eyes, and the film’s first teaser will drop on Sunday.

In the images, we get our first look at Henry Golding, taking over for Ray Park, as the titular character Snake Eyes. Although, we don’t get a good look at him with his iconic mask on, instead seeing him mostly out of costume. It’s possible that since this is a prequel we don’t get to see the full Snake Eyes look until the end of the movie, or they’re just leaving it a surprise for the trailer. We also see Andrew Koji as Storm Shadow, Ursula Corbero as the Baroness, Samara Weaving as Scarlett, and Haruka Abe as Akiko. Not pictured, but starring in the film, are Tahehiro Hira as Kenta and Iko Uwais as Hard Master.

The Snake Eyes first-look images also come with a plot synopsis that delves into just how Snake Eyes became the silent, masked ninja we all know and love:

Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins stars Henry Golding as Snake Eyes, a tenacious loner who is welcomed into an ancient Japanese clan called the Arashikage after saving the life of their heir apparent. Upon arrival in Japan, the Arashikage teach Snake Eyes the ways of the ninja warrior while also providing something he’s been longing for: a home. But, when secrets from his past are revealed, Snake Eyes’ honor and allegiance will be tested – even if that means losing the trust of those closest to him.

The movie is looking to reinvigorate the franchise, which has been dormant since 2013 despite G.I. Joe: Retaliation being a major hit. Paramount struggled to get the third movie, G.I. Joe: Ever Vigilant, out the door, and Snake Eyes became the priority. It isn’t clear when we’ll finally get the third film as it is still in early production. Another spin-off film, featuring obscure Joe character Chuckles, is also in the works.

Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins will release on July 23 only in theaters.
