Space Quest Spiritual Successor Funded

Two Guys from Andromeda hit their funding goal on Kickstarter.

Roger Wilco is one of the touchstones of my youth. Guiding his exploits from lowly janitor to intergalactic hero, all with tongue-in-cheek references to popular culture and sci-fi, was part of what drew me into PC gaming. Those Two Guys from Andromeda also had fun breaking the fourth wall by appearing in their own games, which fueled my love of all things meta in fiction. And now, thanks in no small part to Tim Schafer and Kickstarter, those same Two Guys – Scott Murphy and Mark Crowe – will be able to bring a brand new adventure game to life.

I can’t freaking wait.

As of press time – 100 minutes before closing – the Kickstarter funding drive for SpaceVenture sits at about $532,995. That’s $30,000 above the goal of $500k, which should be more than enough to complete the game and based on what’s been posted on the Kickstarter page and GuysfromAndromeda.com, its’ going to be as good – if not better – than the originals.

Just look at the vocal talent they have lined up:

Gary Owens – Narrator from Space Quest 4 and Space Quest 6, voice of Space Ghost, Laugh-in, and many many others in a long and distinguished career.

Rob Paulsen – Pinky from Pinky and the Brain, Yakko from Animaniacs, Raphael the Ninja Turtle, and multiple characters from Monkey Island among many other characters he has voiced.

Robert Clotworthy – Jim Raynor from StarCraft 1 & 2, Senator Evran & Supreme Chancellor from Star Wars: The Old Republic, and Narrator of The History Channel’s Ancient Aliens series, Big Bang Theory, etc.

Ellen McLain – GLaDOS from Portal 1 & 2, Overwatch from Half-Life 2, Administrator from Team Fortress 2, Witch from Left 4 Dead 2 and many more.

John Patrick Lowrie – Sniper from Team Fortress 2, Sword Control from Halo Reach, Citizens from Half-Life 2 and author of Dancing with Eternity.

It may not star Roger Wilco or have Space Quest in the title – those trademarks are owned by another company – but SpaceVenture looks amazing, and it’s another testament to the power of crowdfunding games that traditional publishers wouldn’t touch with a 10 foot mop handle.

And if you want to get in on the sweet rewards they have lined up, you have about 84 minutes left.
