The Gamefly rumor was correct: An updated version of the Atari 2600 classic space sim Star Raiders is coming next year.
Back in July, Gamefly let it slip that two 8-bit-era classics, Centipede and Star Raiders, were being remade for the Xbox 360 and PS3. Atari didn’t have anything to say on the matter, however, cementing the story’s status as an unconfirmed rumor. And so it remained, until today.
Today, Atari did have something to say: Gamefly was right. A new Star Raiders is in the works, which will retain many features of the original game while adding a brand-new episodic story, customizable ships, “radical battle transformations” and even online play, which will include a co-op campaign mode, competitive team multiplayer and more.
For those unfamiliar with it, Star Raiders was originally released in 1979 for the Atari 8-bit computers but is probably best known as an Atari 2600 title. It ruffled some feathers at the time for being overly violent, but was also noted for its high-quality visuals and relatively sophisticated gameplay. Versions of the game were later released for the Atari 5200 and Atari ST computers and a sequel, Star Raiders 2, came out in 1986.
The new and improved Star Raiders is being developed by Incinerator Studios, the developer behind Pixar’s Cars and MX vs. ATV Untamed, and is expected to come out in early 2011 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and – oh yes – the PC.
