The Cub

The Cub Is a Post-Apocalyptic Jungle Book Inspired by Sega Classics

Many children of the ’90s will agree that platformers are an awesome genre, especially 2D platformers. That makes developer Demagog Studio and publisher Untold Tales’ next game, The Cub, intriguing. It takes place within the same world as the companies’ Golf Club: Wasteland, only this time the gameplay is completely different. The Cub is heavily inspired by Sega Genesis games like The Jungle Book, Aladdin, and The Lion King, which is evident in its debut trailer.

A cheerful video game this is not. It looks gorgeous though, and the platforming sections appear to provide a tough challenge. It’s like a mash of Donkey Kong Country and The Last of Us.

The Cub will feature platforming by way of parkour, in addition to environmental puzzles. Story-wise, the game focuses on a mutant child left stranded on a decaying Earth as the rich escaped to Mars. Your character has developed an immunity to the planet’s chemical waste, so upon the elite’s return to Earth, they clock you as someone to be hunted. I’d calmly try to reason with such a child in the hopes of mass-producing a vaccine instead of violently chasing them, but that would make for less exciting gameplay.

The Cub will launch on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X | S, and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store at some point in the future. You can wishlist the title on Steam now if you so fancy.
