Netflix, CD Projekt Red, & WitcherCon released the teaser trailer & release date for The Witcher season 2 & the Nightmare of the Wolf anime.

The Witcher Season 2 Trailer & Release Date Revealed, Plus Nightmare of the Wolf Release

WitcherCon, the one-day virtual event all about The Witcher (both game and show) happened today with Netflix and CD Projekt Red. And alongside a host of talking heads going on about the franchise, Netflix dropped the first teaser trailer and release date for The Witcher season 2, which stars Henry Cavill in the lead role, though the trailer’s main focus is definitely on Freya Allan’s Ciri.

The second, more linear season of The Witcher picks up where the first left off, with Ciri and Geralt traveling to Kaer Morhen, where she will hopefully be safe. It looks like a lot of training is going to go on with plenty of swords and kung fu-style poles for people to fight on top of. There is, of course, also the tease of Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) returning as well at the end of the teaser.

Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich had the following to say about The Witcher season 2 and the connection between Geralt and Ciri highlighted in the trailer:

At the end of Season 1, we have what I think is one of the sort of most emotional scenes that we’ve done, which is Geralt and Ciri finding each other after they’ve both been searching all season… And it seems like we’ve got a father figure and daughter figure, and everything’s going to be perfect at that point, except for they’ve never met. And so it was really fun to start Season 2 thinking about, well, they’re not a family yet. How do they grow to be one? What do you do if you are a person like Geralt, who has sworn he doesn’t need anyone in the world whatsoever? And then he’s presented with a girl who is now solely in his care. And we have Ciri, who’s used to being under the care of people but has basically been running from everyone for an entire season and now being told that this person is going to take care of you. And so it was really fun to start Season 2 kind of them a little uncertain about how to be with each other, and they have to really grow into that. We wanted to make sure that felt like an authentic relationship, that they weren’t just bonded at the very beginning.

We’ll get to check all that out when The Witcher season 2 lands on its December 17, 2021 release date. But the trailer and release date weren’t the only things revealed during the event. You can also check out the second season’s opening titles and logo below.

And yet there is more. Netflix also revealed our first look at the upcoming anime prequel, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, which has a release date of August 23, 2021 and will focus on Geralt’s mentor Vesemir. Animation is being handled by Korean studio Mir, which did The Legend of Korra.
