Tim Burton’s “9”: Sackboy meets Fallout

This article is over 15 years old and may contain outdated information

If you took a bunch of Sackboys and dropped them into Fallout 3‘s Capital Wasteland, the result might be something rather a lot like “9”, the upcoming animated film from producer Tim Burton.

“9” began life as an 11-minute Oscar-nominated short film of the same name by Shane Ackerman. Ackerman missed out on taking home the statuette, came home with something perhaps even more valuable – the interest of Tim Burton, who signed to produce a feature-length film based on the short.

When titular character 9 first comes to life, he finds himself in a post-apocalyptic world. All humans are gone, and it is only by chance that he discovers a small community of others like him taking refuge from fearsome machines that roam the earth intent on their extinction. Despite being the youngest of the group, 9 convinces the others that hiding will do them no good. They must take the offensive if they are to survive, and they must discover why the machines want to destroy them in the first place. As they’ll soon come to learn, the very future of civilization may depend on them.

There have been some controversial changes to the original, as is often the case. While the original sackboys of Ackerman’s short were all mute, the characters in the feature film are blessed with voices from celebs like Elijah Wood, Jennifer Connelly, and Christopher Plummer.

“9” is scheduled for release in the U.S. on September 9 – 9/9/09. Should be easy enough to remember, huh?
