Metal: Hellsinger Is a Rhythm FPS Being Optimized for Next-Gen

Swedish developer The Outsiders and publisher Funcom are looking to add a fresh twist to first-person shooters with rhythm shooter Metal: Hellsinger. Coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, the shooter will also be optimized for next-gen systems and will have improved visuals, a frame rate up to 120 FPS, and reduced loading times on both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. The 2021 release will task players with strategically shooting demons to an original soundtrack of metal music by the likes of Trivium’s Matt Healy and Arch Enemy’s Alissa White-Gluz.

Each stage of the shooter will have its own song with multiple layers to it. Players’ ability to shoot to the beat of the music will not only increase the damage they are inflicting but also boost the music’s intensity as additional layers of the song will be played when doing well. What starts as background music becomes a full-blown metal song by the end of a level in Metal: Hellsinger.

“This gives the player an incentive to stay on beat, because the experience becomes so intense and so powerful that you want to keep it that way,” Funcom Chief Creative Officer Joel Bylos explained. “I knew that [Creative Director David Goldfarb] and The Outsiders know how to make shooters, but I have never seen anything done quite like this before. It’s a very ambitious project and one we are proud to be a part of.”

Not only is Metal: Hellsinger based upon a unique idea, but there’s a pedigree backing it up. Goldfarb has a long history of working on shooters and was the lead designer on Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 3, in addition to directing Payday 2. Goldfarb said this is the most fun he has ever had creating a title and is a “tribute to the epic imagination and joy and fury of metal.”

Metal: Hellsinger‘s official website is live, and the game can be wishlisted on Steam.
