Skyward Sword Scores Full Orchestral Soundtrack

If an orchestra is good enough for Mario, then it’s good enough for Link.

Nintendo has sprung for a full orchestral soundtrack for Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, which should ensure that the music that players hear as they’re battling monsters and demon princes is suitably heroic.

Skyward Sword will be the first Zelda game to feature a full orchestral soundtrack; previous games have used sampled instruments or MIDI for their music. Shigeru Miyamoto had hinted that Nintendo planned to go down the orchestral route for Skyward Sword with comments like “I don’t think we could do what we did with Mario Galaxy 2 and not try to match that with Zelda.” Of course, bringing an orchestra to E3 was a pretty big hint as well.

It seems like Nintendo is trying a lot of new things for Skyward Sword: new graphical styles, new mechanics, new settings, and now new music. No one’s going to hand the company an award for originality just yet, but it’s great to see it taking a few more steps down that path.

Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword comes out for Wii on November 20th.
