The Expanse season 6 renewal sixth season final season Amazon Studios science fiction sci-fi

The Expanse, Amazon’s critically acclaimed science fiction series that it saved after SyFy canceled the series, will return for a final, sixth season. Amazon announced the news today on the eve of the fifth season debuting. The hard sci-fi series, which is based on the books by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck (aka James S.A. Corey), has performed well for Amazon, but the show’s story is coming to an end.

The show ending should feel a bit different for fans of the series this time, who are often zealot-like in their admiration for the show. When SyFy canceled the series, the creators weren’t given the chance to wrap up their storylines well, but this time around series writers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby are on board and looking to round out the show into a satisfying conclusion. The Expanse focuses on a future where humanity has colonized Mars and a nearby asteroid belt, but the different groups now fight against each other.

Co-Head of Television at Amazon Studios Vernon Sanders said about the final season renewal, “We’d like to thank Naren, Andrew [Kosove], Broderick [Johnson], everyone at Alcon [Television Group] and the entire cast and crew of The Expanse for the hard work and love they have put into the series over these past seasons. We’re very happy we can give the incredibly loyal and passionate fans of The Expanse the satisfying conclusion to the series that they deserve. We know they’ll love how Seasons 5 and 6 unfold.”

The sixth season will see nearly the entire cast return, including Shohreh Aghdashloo, Steven Strait, Dominique Tipper, and Wes Chatham. However, Cas Anvar will not return to the final season after allegations of sexual misconduct were levied at him.

You can tune into the fifth season of The Expanse on Dec. 16 when Amazon drops the first three episodes. The show will then air weekly. Hopefully, they can finish out the beloved series a bit better than Games of Thrones did.
