World’s Craziest Xylophone Used In New Smartphone Ad


It’s like a Rube Goldberg machine and a xylophone had a baby in the woods …

At some point in their educational careers, most middle schoolers (at least in the United States) end up getting assigned to create a Rube Goldberg machine. And, for the most part, nobody bothers to construct them after that. However, every now and then, someone comes along and makes a Rube Goldberg-esque creation that is really pretty amazing, like the one on display here.

As you can see (but only at the very end of the video), the two-minute film is actually a commercial for the new Sharp Touch Wood SH-08C smartphone. The phone is being sold by Japanese mobile phone operator NTT docomoco. Until then, the (enormous) homemade xylophone in the middle of a tranquil forest plays Bach’s Cantata 147, “Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring” as a small wooden ball rolls down its bars.

The phone, it turns out, is available only in limited supplies. NTT docomoco has announced that it’ll only be selling 15,000 of the SH-08C, which it turns out is due to the wood used in the phone itself.

According to Geek:

From what I was able to deduce from NTT docomo’s product page, which is available only in Japanese, the colors of each phone varies by the wood’s grain. The number of phones is limited because it’s difficult to mass produce the wood that comes from the cypress tree in Shimanto, Japan.

The phone does look pretty nice, but this commercial is simply lovely. It seems safe to assume that supplies won’t last long.
