World of Warcraft: Midnight: How to catch up and get ready for WoW’s next expansion

World of Warcraft‘s Midnight expansion releases in March 2026, and it is all set to progress the interconnected, multiple-expansion-spanning Worldsoul saga that has been simmering ever since a titanic blade was plunged into the heart of Azeroth at the climax of Legion’s story.

Midnight will keep the WoW fires lit and the gears of its narrative churning along, providing players old and new with an enticing reason to leap back into favourite characters, build up and ready new alts for adventure, or even step into these fabled realms for the very first time. We’ll help ease the process by directing your WoW: Midnight catch-up.

The Escapist recaps

  • New players will need to level up to access Midnight’s challenging fresh content.
  • Learning the ropes is essential before stepping up to meet the challenges of the expansion.
  • Returning players will grapple with simplified systems and revisit revamped areas like Silvermoon.
  • Midnight has the chance to remove bloat and increase WoW accessibility.

Your level of required readiness in how to catch up for WoW: Midnight will differ depending on your current familiarity with World of Warcraft and what you’re looking to get out of your first brushes with the expansion.

If you’re a brand-new or lapsed player simply trying to access Midnight in the first place, your requirements will be tailored to story progress and XP gain, ensuring you won’t be left drifting without context in this ongoing saga, or too low a level for its many emerging challenges.

A WoW: Midnight levelling guide will help boost you all the way to the current level cap of 80. Thankfully, this process has been drastically sped up in the lead-up to Midnight, with significantly less XP required to surge from level 1 to 80.

For the impatient or returning players starting a new account or alt, WoW: Midnight character boosts can be purchased that will instantly ramp your character up to level 80 and provide expansion-ready gear, faction renown, storage space, and flying mounts.

While this can be a tempting choice for grind-averse players, it is very much not recommended as a path for total Warcraft newbies. Taking the time to explore introductory areas, learning the ropes of cooperative play, and mastering raid roles will allow for a fuller and less overwhelming gameplay experience.

Learning the expansive backlog of Warcraft lore will be a big ask, but at the very least, reading up on the ongoing Worldsoul saga, the previous War Within expansion, and the history of the Midnight-focused Blood Elves will be beneficial before diving headfirst into the middle of this journey.

While newbies looking to rush right into Midnight and enjoy the expansion-starting buzz have a requisite grind ahead of them, active WoW players ready and raring for the day-one drop have more of a knowledge-based period of preparation ahead.

Already entering the expansion thoroughly boosted and ready with experience cuts down on any active gameplay time needed to access Midnight’s fresh content. Thankfully, there’s little need to also come packing the very best current gear to tackle new challenges or worry about being left behind or letting your guild down.

If you’re a little behind on WoW’s modern expansions and asking yourself, “Do I need War Within gear for Midnight?” rest easy. As players rush into the new zones and raids and chew through their content like locusts, they will almost immediately encounter new gear that outstrips old favourites. Expansion launches are the great equaliser when it comes to resetting WoW’s endgame power level.

The best thing that entrenched Warcraft players can do heading into the Midnight pre-patch preparation is to let go of some of their expectations and familiarity. Long-time WoW fans will not only find the once-familiar world reworked in many key ways, but the systems that have underpinned the game’s long life as well.

Midnight’s major changes to the face of Azeroth come in the form of a rejuvenated Quel-Thalas, allowing the Blood Elves to reclaim more of their former majesty, finally. The once-ruined capital of Silvermoon will be a major hub for Horde players to congregate and explore – as well as a small section available to the Alliance. Whole new zones like the underground jungle of Harandar and the dark, primordial Voidstorm bring stunning vistas and terrible danger alike.

The under-the-hood changes that Midnight brings to WoW are perhaps even more substantial, however. WoW will handle very differently once the expansion drops, as classes will be revamped to rely on fewer buttons and less rotation complexity, with the intent of prioritising straightforward gameplay and immediate impact. It may take some time for Warcraft veterans to fully acclimate to this new gameplay style, though Midnight’s early zone exploration should provide ample time to adjust.

Midnight is set to shift the WoW experience in surprisingly substantial ways. While Azeroth may be less aesthetically altered than the chaotic remaking of Cataclysm, this is still a surprisingly extensive mechanical rework that, if successful, will serve to deflate years of accumulated bloat and make the game accessible and streamlined for players new as well as old.
