What is this Wild West thing?

It's a "no rules" subforum for people with an active subscription. Which is surprisingly many, but that's because apparently a severely disgruntled tech team gave a permanent subscription for free to most active users upon being suddenly laid off.

Oh dang, wish I'd been around for that. What sort of stuff goes on over there?

Not much. It's pretty much no different than the other forums. Free Speech hasn't bettered or worsened the general discourse. Like R&P, political discussions devolve into partisanism spouting lines from each sides playbook.

I'm all for Defy taking their part of the blame and they definitely don't want to take responsibility for this site. Don't let that be a scapegoat for us taking our responsibility too.

Honestly, I don't think we ever had an opportunity to take responsibility for pretty much anything so it's completely irrelevant what the community did or didn't want, and WW is really just a mere distraction from the main issue of the site being completely fucking abandoned except for Yahtzee vids.

The biggest Problem is that we aren't really a community. The Rules are designed to promote a kind of faux-politeness so everything devolves into passive-agressive snark. Grudges are carried over between Threads because we can't be honest to each other. It also doesn't help that we lack any kind of Chat Thread that would allow us to simply talk about out Day to Day lives and actually get a better picture of the people behind the posts.

Really nothing is stopping us from collecting packing up our shit and moving on to a place where we would actually have control. I even considered trying to set something up at one point. But it wouldn't work, so why bother?

I don't think we're a community for one reason. All sides of politics seems to be accepted here. Other sites usually involve draconian mods enforcing a particular ideology. Having one major ideology makes it easier to develop a community. No matter what anyone says to the contrary, I've found mods here less likely to enforce their baises onto others. Most people complaining about mods just want the site to be like most others, either left or right. Despite what Sargon states, the Escapists didn't fall into one side even during GG. It's the major reason I still hang around. I can talk to someone with a different ideology without being insulted.

If a Caramel Frappe falls in the forest, and the Escapist is empty, does it make a sound?

RIP

In the spirit of another in this thread, I'll throw out something for CF on the odd chance that he reads this thread.

You're a good guy, Caramel, I hope that you're doing ok. Yeah you flew off the handle sometimes, yeah you overreacted here and there, yeah you took things badly when there was no need to. But you are also a sterling example that people are capable of self betterment. I've been on the site for a long time, and lurked long before Yahtzee came on the scene, and in that time I saw you do something that I have seen painfully few times both on and offline. You grew up, you matured, you made yourself into a better person - slowly but surely.

I didn't like you the first time I read your posts. This is something I do. I used to obsessively read forums, learn people and watch them. Its not meant to be creepy, even in our interactions hence you probably never realized I did it, its just a way I entertain myself. Watching one person is creepy, but when you watch almost everyone it becomes 'people watching' and that's basically what I did. Months away from home working in a tiny town strips a person of their most basic hobbies, and even video games lose their pull over time when played on an electrified graham cracker. So instead I watch and read and think and I make predictions about how a person will respond to this or that thread and I nod my head when I'm right and shrug my shoulders when I'm not. You had a lot of faults, still have plenty but we all do, and I could read most of them like a playbook. I'm not gonna sit here and tell you all they ways I think you sucked, but I am gonna say that you did manage to consistently make me shrug my shoulders, and after a while I thought on it and realized that I wasn't bad at predicting, you were just growing up and changing yourself for the better. So kudos dude. Not enough people make the strides as a person you did in the time you did it.

I really hope you left the way you did because you were making an Irish exit to a party that went too long than thinking you had to sneak off. You don't owe anyone a goodbye, but you also don't deserve to feel like you had flee without a sound. Don't feel bad about not being able to come through on the promises, none of them were going to happen anyway. Another one of your faults is probably promising before you're sure you can deliver, but at least the promises were made with your heart in the right place. Its not like the complainers ever did shit to make this place better to be in, hell half of them have been actively making it worse while unironically blaming a subforum for the decline. If nothing else you had power and you didn't misuse it when you could have, and a younger you likely would have.

Cheers bud, take it easy.

P.S.
If you ever want to play SK again, throw me a line - I might even check my pm's more than one a month. Sad but true - life is better for me these days, I rarely get paid to sit on the internet in a trailer in the middle of nowhere anymore, but I'll probably keep watching until there isn't anything left to watch. There's something comforting about watching a place go out the way you watched it come in. At least keeping up takes little enough time it works well with my current schedule.

I'm surprised how much you hate the WW. You were even given pub club after the massive handout so you could have access to it.

I never wanted access to the wild west, I wanted a bigger avatar. And I should clarify I'm not against the idea of a wild west type forum. Somewhere were dudes and dudettes can post shitty 4chan memes and ask if traps are gay, sure why the fuck not?
Its called a Chan and they're everywhere else.
I just think its BS when those self same users ask just what went wrong here and when did everyone get so toxic? Gee, probably around the time they introduced the pro-toxic, rules free shitshow subforum and you joined it to vote on Weebs and post on who has bigger hard-ons for anime tits and ask do Africans count as people.
And if someone wants to post shitting dick nipples, go for it. But they give up their right to complain the site has gone down hill, and that suddenly everyone is posting 4chan memes from 2011.

LostGryphon:

My first impulse, being that you weren't worth more than a gif, just happened to be dead on.

Oh please, don't put in the extra effort for me. A simple .jpeg of tired anime memes will do my old soul enough. Please. I wouldn't want you to strain something.

I mean no disrespect, but I could hardly disagree more. That's how you make a echo-chamber that alienates anyone that doesn't adhere to a ever narrowing point of view.

The Site already is very left-leaning, literally to the point that fellow left-wingers such as myself are called right-wing for not towing the party line at all times or seeing nuance.

It's not so much that we need to enforce some ideology. It's really the Rules. They make it possible for actual problem Users to have a entirely clean slate. You can totally be a complete Shithead around here whilst being within the confines of the Rules. If you know how to do it you can antagonize a User to your Hearts content and when said User snaps and calls you out as the Asshole you are, they get punished and you get to declare victory.

It also doesn't help that every incarnation of the Team has had a "Fuck you, got mine" interpretation of how to run this joint. Constant Radio-Silence and really, the Team has never cared much about what the Community at large wants or what would be good for it. For the longest time this was because they were trying to project a certain image for the site, now it seem's to largely be because that's the way things have always been. I mean, the current team just kinda took over and yet we are expected to consider them to have authority or pretend that they know what they are doing simply by virtue of having taken over. If they were interested in what's best for the community, they would have asked US who we want to lead and simply stepped down once that was decided.

And while the Community may not have been one-sided, the contributers and team have taken pretty hard stances on multiple controversies when it would have been best advised to stay out of it as no matter what stance they take, they were always going to alienate people.

This is a gaming Forum, it really doesn't need a hard political stance. Politics altogether should be a afterthought. Now practically any active Thread is focused on politics with the actual point of the Site ending up as the afterthought. And why is that? Because the Team in the past did nothing to steer the community away from that, I'd go as far as to say that they in part encouraged it out of sheer ignorance to the consequences that would have. Users with a Hyperfocus on politics should have been shown the door. Instead they were left to their devices to alienate people.

bluegate:
That's a bit of a sad realization, isn't it?

At this point, the Escapist's website is best abandoned, but even if the community were to migrate to a different site, what would "it" do there aside from continue on aimlessly bickering with itself.

It is pretty sad, part of the reason we've not moved is that the user base values specific site features over staying together as a community. I'd put that down to the lack of actual community interaction beyond bickering as you say plus gaming being less specialist and plenty of people getting that itch scratched elsewhere these days.

At this stage given the apathy of the community and the irrelevance of the archived material here, plus the fact the site going down wouldn't give you permission to re-upload it, it's probably best to just let the site die.

Silentpony:

The funny thing is that I remember when this site was virulently anti-4chan, it's weird to think the community looked at the thing it had always professed to hate and thought 'yeah...yeah we could use some of that here'. Maybe the community changed, I think it probably did around Gamergate, it just seems so weird that of all the places to have an unmoderated subforum it's the Escapist.

The phrase is 'toeing the line'. I tell you this because I don't think that's a spelling error, and a lot of people get this one wrong (I used to) because 'towing the line' makes sense too.

You misinterprwt my post. I mean the exact opposite.

You know that a lot people would think this place is very much right leaning? Sargon declared the site as bastion that supported GG based on Tito's and the mod reaction to it.

And some people think the Earth is flat. Those that consider this place right leaning are the kind of people that would jump at their shadow if it fell to their right.

And considering that GG was neither right nor left as a whole and GG is also almost 4 years ago when this site had signficantly more active Users, I don't see how it is relevant.

The simple truth is that the Escapist is not the left leaning site it once was, back in the early 10's. Today there's a pretty even split between right leaning and left leaning people on the Escapist, which is why both sides feel as if theirs is in the minority. The whole GG debacle moved the political balance on the Escapist quite a bit to the right, which is no doubt why people like Sargon feel that this is a bastion for his supporters.

Don't really want to open this with only an argument without talking about the topic. I'll always consider Caramel Frappe as the lovable guy who had a thing for monster girls and a weird milkshake. I don't really care about the drama in the Escapist as it feels like a sinking ship regardless and I'm just hoping to not be banned before it is finally down under. And in general I feel like we never have good replacement for quality users who abandon ship.

And for the argument:

I mean, at best I'd say there's an even split between left leaning and radical left leaning people on the Escapist, or at the most optimistic nearly all right winged users just don't say their opinion out loud. I daresay R&P today is an echo chamber in its finest.
If there was a strong right wing movement before and during GG it was met with mod culling it over the months afterward.

I sure hope if I ever decide to leave it won't result in a thread like this that airs out all my dirty laundry before devolving into the political leanings of the site.

I would say the exact same about you. Also, if we are going to talk about how GG was only about game journalism, I'm going to point out that some people on GG only focused on game journalism. And I wouldn't call it a majority. You personally might have been one of those, but that wasn't the whole range of ideologies mixed up in GG.

I hated the whole GG. Tried to stay neutral. It was just a bunch of ideologues from both sides who had axes to grind. It ended being nothing about game journalism. It didn't really improve it either. Both sides were an utter failure

1. Not really, I still disagree with you. I don't what experiences you've made on other Forums. But I've lead my own and been on quite a few over the years, there were never any problems with Community building despite perspectives all over the political spectrum, though we never really got anyone on the far right or left.

2. You should calm down over GamerGate. I haven't actually said anything about what it was about, just that it wasn't really on any particular side of the political spectrum. I wasn't involved in it at all unless watching Videos to figure out what people were arguing over counts. Like I said, this was nearly 4 years ago, get over it.

It seems like every thread we have that involves someone leaving it devolves into this, as well as a GG bitch fit. It's like some people can't help themselves from bringing it up and fighting about it when it's supposed to be done and dealt with

I remember flat-out telling him he shouldn't work for free, no mater how much he loved the site. Defy took advantage of his passion, and I think the job probably soured that passion, as well as his legacy among the remnants of this community.

I'm awful with names. Was he that one guy who's really into anime and women with gigantic tits?

Wintermute:
I'm awful with names. Was he that one guy who's really into anime and women with gigantic tits?

Monstergirls, specifically Lamia which is a type of half human half snake. If I remember the origins (greek... Maybe?) They were entirely female and captured male humans for husbands.

He liked a pink haired anime one, with average hooters.

Wintermute:

Maybe. But I remember the guy posting some threads here. With some pictures of his favorite anime girls. Maybe I'm imagining the big tits, now I'm not sure.

Hey guys, didn't think anyone would notice but ... that was a bit silly of me to assume. I could try to lie and make excuses, but I won't. I'm just going to give you the absolute truth because you guys deserve at least that from me.

Question 1: Why did you leave us, Frappe?

Because my life isn't exactly peachy right now. Sure, it's not bad and I consider myself lucky for a lot of things that I do have ... but at the current moment, it's not smooth. My real life job is stacking hours onto me, where I only get 1 day off and i'm working over 50+ hours to pay for bills. I live with my parents, so it's not too difficult, but here in California- things are expensive. As much as I would of loved continuing to try helping the website, i'm too drained. Had to leave an RP I was in, and abandon a few projects, just to make sure I didn't shut down on anyone. So case in point, my job is really demanding for my attention.

Question 2: Why didn't you live up to your promises, Frappe?

I admit, some things were my fault. I shouldn't of gotten people's hopes up (especially my own) in fixing the website. I merely assumed with my power and access to the control panel, I could keep this place up. Sadly, I am not a tech expert and to have actual people like Kross here ... would require money. No one is usually willing to work for free, and Defy refused my numerous e-mails and calls (yes, phone calls) to allow me in saving this website. If they allowed me full control of the panel and allowed me to edit / change things, surely this website would have protection against the bots along with functional commands. Again, sadly, I do not have that access and despite trying everything I could ... I failed my community. I promised you guys that I would solve the problems, but I only left you all in the dark. It would be like going up to your child and saying Santa isn't bringing any presents this Christmas, because in truth, you couldn't afford those presents. That was the gut punch I felt when I couldn't do anything to help you guys. I'm sorry.

Question 3: Does this mean we'll never see you again, Frappe?

Maybe not here, on The Escapist ... however, I do hold other accounts on multiple websites. If you want to befriend me or stay in touch for whatever reason, I do have a Steam account with the same username. I also play on the Xbox One and PS4, with an online membership (you'll have to PM me if you want my username for those). I even have a Discord account (The Dark Soul#3686) if you guys want to hit me up there. While I am messaged daily by numerous people, sometimes I stay quiet because i'm just trying to enjoy my time alone. Odd thing to say, but sometimes isolation is what brings me peace, sometimes.

Question 4: So are the rumors about you true, Frappe?

Depends, most likely they are. One rumor about me is that I was greedy for badges, and only acted kind in order to get what I wanted. Not going to lie like I said, for my original intent was to collect as many Escapist badges as possible. When I first joined The Escapist, I loved the design + layout of this place. The badges caught my attention, and noticed how people treated one another depending on their reputation. I did nearly everything I could to get my hands on those, even if it meant I had to sometimes kiss @$$ for it. Did I act kind to get what I wanted? Yes and no, for in real life ... i'm pretty nice. I do have manners, and I try to be selfless. I just kicked it up a notch on here to stand out. People called me out on it, and while I wanted to bite their heads off ... it wasn't professional. It wasn't good to snap for it would ruin my reputation, so I had to keep calm at all times.

Didn't always work, but I managed to succeed for the most part. Overtime, I realized my behavior was kind of, disgusting. After having all the best badges, I didn't feel as great anymore. With such a big reputation, I noticed people looked up to me and kept complimenting me. Wanting to actually become a better person, I tried taking criticism to heart and changing myself. Wasn't easy, it never is ... but in time, I was accepted even by those who weren't fond of me and I became attached to this place not because of the badges, but because of the people- you guys. I stayed and tried to make it better because I wanted everyone to enjoy it just as much as I did.

Question 5: Did you read any of our posts in this thread, Frappe?

Every single post, yes. Seeing how people remember me for the good and bad bits, makes me happy. It's kind of like experiencing nostalgia, with how many years passed by. While it was, pretty pathetic of me to simply slip into the shadows without saying goodbye to anyone, I didn't want to make a scene. So many have already declared the website doomed, that I didn't want to add fuel to the fire. At the same time, I needed to focus on my life and not get distracted with trying to make projects work when I can't even code the darn articles properly. With that said, you guys also have my apology for not even telling any of you farewell.

Question 6: I've got things to say / ask you, Frappe!

Go right ahead. I won't hide or lie about anything ... ask if you insist. I'll be here, reading whatever else you guys have to say. Just wanted to thank you all again for making my time here well spent, and I appreciate you guys a lot. Very much so, actually, because this website helped me through some rough times. Hopefully, you guys are getting through without much problem as well.

Didn't know you had a PS4.

Go play doki doki literature club. It's the new katawa shoujo.
Except the only person you should be dating is Monika.

Baffle2:
Would it be outrageous to suggest people are taking this far too seriously?

Nope.

And you're right, it's Paragon Fury.

That guy has a porn problem.

Wintermute:
I'm awful with names. Was he that one guy who's really into anime and women with gigantic tits?

Probably? I never pay attention to names either, but there are a few Escapers who post anime tits a lot.

Caramel Frappe:
Hey guys, didn't think anyone would notice but ... that was a bit silly of me to assume. I could try to lie and make excuses, but I won't. I'm just going to give you the absolute truth because you guys deserve at least that from me.

snip

Well, that was pleasantly unexpected. Although now that you're here, I actually don't know what to ask. I gotta say though, you should move out of California ASAP. That place really sucks. The only nice thing about it is the northern part, scenic wise.

Caramel Frappe:
You did good, kid.

Thanks for all of your efforts, and thanks for trying to bring some light back to the bleak situation we're in. Real life is more important though, so I wouldn't even hesitate to make the choice you did. However things go for us here, well... we'll see. But you did your best, and that's all I ever really wanted from people here.

Good luck with things on your end!

Good luck with the job, dood. A consistent 50+ hours a week work schedule is pretty brutal.
