Please someone explain explain to me why one of those words is sexist but those other words that mean the same thing aren't.

Those four words don't all mean the same thing.

Well no but cunt mean can vagina or scumbag, yet neither of those words is considered sexist.

If you use vagina as a slur then that would be sexist as well. Asshole isn't sexist since everyone has one they are not unique to half the population. Scumbag refers to condoms of which there are both male and female versions again not restricted to either gender.

I've never hear semen be called scum before.

As for cunt words can have multiple definitions and like i said it's something used against both genders for the same reasons.

when you get down to it a lot of insults are based on genitals.
prick, dick, cock, twat, ass, asshole, butthole.

Condom is the etymology of the word scum bag. I think it's sexist to use any of the gendered insults including cunt. All the definitions for cunt come back to women's genitals. Using that term as a disparagement or contempt for an individual shows a contempt for women's genitals and by extension women. It's also has the added layer of gender policing when used on men.

Since a lot of people on this thread seem to have trouble removing their opinions from the argument, I'll do the honors.

Any gendered insult is sexist, cunt, dick, pussy, whatever, all sexist.
Sexism here being defined in the very simple terms of: any and all terms that attach a negative connotation to a gendered word.
If you're using an insult that offends by comparing the subject to a woman, a man, or any specific anatomy of the two, in a negative way, then no shit it's sexist.

Someone up near the op said that they weren't sure because they had a friend who called dudes cunts too. This is kinda silly, If the main point of the insult is that the insulted (a man) should be offended because the insulter compared him to a woman, then yeah, sexist.

Obviously context means everything, but completely divorced of circumstance or opinion, gendered insults are of course sexist.

By that logic calling someone an asshole makes you a misanthrope and calling someone a faggot means you hate cigarettes.

Ok how exactly is your argument devoid of your opinion?

Ah whatever, there are no bad words it's all a matter of how and why they're used. The message is the message, and if the message isn't sexist then it doesn't matter what profanity they spew.

Asshole doesn't have a long history of of telling people how worthless they are for having one the way cunt does. Nor the larger implications that the only proper way to act is like someone without an anal orifice the way men are policed not to act "feminine".

When the anemones enslave us all I'll concede that you have a point and not the spurious rebuff you've given me.

I do hate cigarettes I'll give you that. Although as you are of the different definitions defense I'm surprised you didn't mention bundles of wood.

I don't know if it's quite fair to say "and by extension women"

It's fairly easy to say that in regards to the word 'pussy' I agree. You're saying someone has the courage of a female.
But cunt? I don't think it's stating that someone is a woman, or really has anything to do with being a woman. It's more to do with the fact it's genitalia, which, by and large in the eyes of society, are rude, 'disgusting' and shouldn't be mentioned. It's nothing to do with the fact that the specific organ belongs to women.

It's more contempt for genitals than women's genitals

If you go looking at both official dictionaries (and even informal ones like urban dic) you repeatedly see cunt as referring both to female genitals but also just "a woman". As it's been popular enough to make it into the dictionary I'd call it fair to say cunt=women is another definition. I agree there is an aspect of genital shameing going on but I think the way cunt has been used is also at issue. Dick*/** has very different usage then cunt*** for example. Far too often I see cunt used on a woman to get her to shut up or on a man similar to pussy for doing something "unmanly". Maybe you have a distinctly different experience with the usage of the word but that's what I've seen.

*which before someone say's I'm being hypocritical I've said I also disagree with using it as an insult.

Examples of how they are used from urban dictionary
**Somebody who's purposely treating you like crap or putting you down for no reason or being selfish
***stupid/contemptible person of either gender

Oxford English Dictionary:

cunt
noun
vulgar slang

1. A woman's genitals.
2. An unpleasant or stupid person.

Nothing untoward there in regards to being a female.

I read a few other 'unofficial' dictionaries too, and yes some of them pointed towards: Usually disparaging & obscene : woman

I don't really see where it's set in stone as Cunt = Woman. So jumping on that theory and defending it skin and teeth seems a little odd to me. I'm sure people believe that definition, and some unofficial sources may state that, but that's just different people opinions on the word. Which kind of leads me back to the argument of many other posters, The word is only sexist to people who feel it's sexist, and the way the word is used.

Ah, I see. I'm not sure where you're from, but (from my experiences) in the U.K I've never heard it said to mean the same thing as pussy, It's just an insult towards someone you find unpleasant. It has no gender specific connotation.

So, if it doesn't have an official origin towards sexism, and over here in the U.K it has no gender attachment but over in the U.S (Sorry, I'm just guessing you're from the U.S?) it does, then which is correct? Surely it just falls back to the argument that it depends on where and how it's used.

One thing I did find quite interesting that I wasn't aware of, which maybe most feminists are (I don't know), is the origin of Vagina.

While Cunt (Cunnus, Coynte, Kunta, kunte, con, coņo, cona) was just a name given to the entire female genitalia with no further meaning, Vagina actually means 'Sword-sheath'! I find it weird that the far less "offensive" word is surely the far sexist.

Please poke me if none of this makes any sense, It's very late and I'm tired, ha ha

Well I guess it depends... If you say "color" then yes it is sexist and you should be horribly ashamed. If you say "colour" then it's about as fine as any other curse word I guess.

(This is a sarcastic observation. Some people find this to be appropriately funny.)

I don't see how it is. Its not any more sexist than calling someone a dick or prick, which I don't consider to be sexist at all.

I don't understand him either. Anyway, I'll do you one better. The message isn't sexist. Only YOU can decide to interpret it that way. The rest is about the speaker in particular. To whit, he can be all the sexist he wants, but only YOU can give a damn.

No more than calling someone a dick is sexist. Personally, I do think it is one of the worst insults that you can use although I know that's due to my upbringing. My mother has outright told my siblings and I that she will smack us if she ever catches us using that word. We're all in our 20s but she's still quite a scary lady when she wants to be.

So glad to see that censorship is still very prominent even among escapist users. they are willing to punch people becasue someone said a word they dont like. its not like we can ever allow freedom of speech right?

Cunt is less insulting in english than in american slang, i think. so i find it less insulting than an american woukld find it, since i'm more influenced by english language.

either way. the insulting element of any word is decided more by the nature of the interaction between the speaker and the spoken to. i might call my friend an asshole for stealing my pen, for example, and mean something entirely different than when a call somone who cuts me off on the road an asshole.

OhJohnNo:
Not in Britain.

I once participated in a 67-post Facebook discussion about how much of a cunt Jeremy Kyle is. The word came up in basically every post.

Yeah, not exactly a big deal.

I'd never heard of this guy before and looked him up. What a cunt.

OP Depends where you are.

Bear In Heaven:
Not in Australia. The country where everyone is a cunt. We have them all: dumb cunts, stupid cunts, ugly cunts, smart cunts, foreign cunts, fucked cunts, sick cunts, mad cunts, cool cunts, clever cunts, hot cunts, and the rest.

So in the gist of things, we love the word 'cunt' and maybe just maybe it's slowly replacing the word 'mate'. I hope not because I love calling people 'mate'.

I love the word mate but I don't think it will be going anywhere, at least where I live in Australia.

Cunt is usually used when describing strangers but mate is people you know but it is kinda ridiculous how many different ways we can use the word cunt.

About the sexism though, not in this day and age even with its history of supposed use to shame women in history, which I can understand but honestly while our words are a product of history they don't have to stay that way because words are always changing.

I just like words being words with a meaning but you craft the context out of the specific words you use in a sentence which can give many different effects.

Should have made that clear, I live In NSW east cost and here its like what I said. I don't think the word will go away but I don't doubt what you say of course and different parts of the country have different dialects and vocabulary. Sorry for any confusion.

I don't want mate going away either though :/

I've called someone a walking giant ballsack before. Does that mean I'm sexist? Person didn't seem too offended by it. Shocked yes. Offended not so much.

I could repeat a few things my wife has called me over the years. But they might be alittle to strong for a public forum. =D

yes, that is applicable to me.

If it is sexist, it must also be sexist when I call someone a dick or cock. I use the word cunt occasionally. It's just a word. It doesn't have the same type of meaning behind it like, say, nigger. It's just a nice, harsh word to use when someone has pissed you off.

IndomitableSam:
In North America, it's pretty much the worst word you could use on a woman. I know it's fairly commonly used elsewhere, but here it's pretty horrible. If someone said it to me, or someone I cared about (and meant it), there would probably be a punch to the face involved.

My sister and I call each other it sometimes when we're really angry at each other, though (we're both adults). On the flipside, my mother can't stand the word and gets really upset when she hears it. It's a little more common with my generation (Gen X/Y), but still not a word used in normal speech. Or even hateful speech. Throw 'fuck' around all you want, but if someone says 'cunt', it's gone too far for most people.

Edit: The sexist part of it, I guess, would be the fact that it's insulting a woman to the nth degree and saying all she is is her body parts. And in media, it usually is the word reserved for those committing assaults or who really have issues with women.

See, I consider this incredibly stupid. I can insult a women using a string of words that includes 0 swear words, yet somehow as soon as I just call someone a "cunt" it is the end of the world and I am a sexist pig?

Every woman I have ever met insists the c--- is terrible word that should never said by anyone to anyone. I am not sure why but I won't argue it.

I call men Cunts and women Dicks.

So no, I don't feel its sexist.

Then again I'm about the whitest, malest, least religious, straightest person you could imagine, so naturally I don't get offended.

A word can have no meaning unless said meaning is given to it. Cunt is both sexist and non sexist based on who says and hears it. I have heard people claim (Sadly, they were genuine) that "Erecting a building" is sexist due to men getting erections and this is stating only men can build(Somehow ignoring the Clitoris can also get an erection)

In short. It's an individual thing.

Is nigger racist if you call a white guy that?

Dick and Cunt aren't the same level of insulting, a more equal feminine slur would be pussy.

I don't think so, isn't being a 'cunt' just the female equivalent of being a 'dick'?

Froggy Slayer:
I'm not going to mill around. This thread is about the word cunt.

I've seen a lot of people get incredibly offended by the word cunt being used as an insult. Obviously, it's a very strong word, but the people who dislike it that much usually say that it is sexist. Being British, I believe these people to be wrong, but I would like some bloody Yanks to explain to me how sexist it really is over there, for I have heard conflicting reports.

Any people of differing nationalities may also give perspective on how cunt is used in their nation.

Let me answer this with a question: Do you consider calling somebody a dick to be sexist?

I guess technically it's sexist in America because it's mostly used against women. I wouldn't call it misogynistic though.

language is all about interpretation. depends on how you feel about being called a "cunt" due to your choice of actions that resulted in somebody labeling you as therefore.
