I Hit It With My Axe: Episode Five: Blobs and Brain Switching

 Pages PREV 1 2 3 4 NEXT

This show is entertaining. It's not hilarious, gripping, suspenseful or amazing in any way, but it's certainly not bad.

I agree with some of the above; This is the best episode yet.
The way it's cut is... not really annoying per se, but it makes it harder to watch.
The (timing of) "I'm gonna make some tea" made me smile. (around 02:50)

"Sacrifice the horse!" best response ever to a blob attack. It won't do much, but gawDAMN would it be entertaining.

"the blob engulfs the horse and eats it"
*roll*
".. and it doubles in size; your turn.

you said at episode 5 it would click. it did. very enjoyable indeed. i cannot think of anything i would like changed.

I think this show gets better with every episode.
The girl who likes to sneak (Frankie was it?) is adorable.

Dark_Reaction:
I have to agree with the lack of imagination mentioned earlier.
To pull a Yahtzee, it feels like Im watching some exotic birds struggling painfully to breath in a cloud of the pollution tainted air over Beijing.
Only the pollution is 100% pure nerd agent. And the birds do anal.
Blah, Im getting off topic.

Suggestion, should you ever try this again:
Let em play themselves as level 20 'whatevers'.
And throw em into the City of Brass.
At least they'll know what to do when a bunch of ugly creeps try to turn them into sex slaves.
And it'll be alot more interesting than watching a group of chicks whose primary defense mechanism is 'roll onto back, spread legs' feebly trying to come up with combat strategies to defeat amorphous blobs and/or expressing their utter disinterest in something that isnt a sex organ.

what? birds? pollution? are you high or something?

you are not yahtzee, and you are not funny. go eat a biscuit.

on topic: getting steadily better, will see the next one

for the record: im still watching it. kinda wondering why you wanted to break off the spider-ladys legs when you coulduv just kept the spiders body though :P

Why not just keep the Spider Queen body? I mean, it'd be pretty damn useful...

I'm sorry, I don't normally jump into other people's conversations, but I feel compelled to interject in this case.

Zero Pattern:
Christ, I'm so tired of people writing it off simply because it has porn stars in it, and as such must be a devious plot by the shady escapist staff to get views through exploiting our sexual frustration.

I can't write off Buckley comics because he randomly puts miscarriages and depth attempts in? I can't write off Uwe Boll because he hires prostitutes instead of extras? Luckily all these examples are terrible anyway, but people decide against something on pure morals or disgust all the time. And there's nothing wrong with that. You've NEVER passed on something because the principle alone was insulting to you?

Except I wasn't referring to people deciding against something on pure morals or disgust. I was referring to people who seem to immediately assume that since there are porn stars in the show, it must be an attempt to get views by simply flaunting attractive females.

Replace "attractive" with "slutty" and that's exactly what this is. It's not random "hot" (if these girls are your type of thing) girls playing D&D. It's porn stars playing D&D. What other reason would they have to put them in there?

Zero Pattern:
Which really doesn't seem to be the case (there is little to non mention of porn, sex, etc. actually in the show).

... except for most of the first episode, the constant middle school-level jokes (Haha... you said suck... 'cuz people have seen you do that... haha), and the random closeup ass shots in episode three. Have you actually watched this series yet?

Zero Pattern:
I'm talking about a possible misconception, not principals or morals. Yes the shows main attraction may be the perceived awkwardness of porn stars playing D&D, but that doesn't mean the show merely intends to entice you into watching because there are beautiful women involved.

Again, "beautiful" is clearly subjective, but to the point: Their selection of cast was made exclusively for concept. Of course they're hoping that their cast and concept will increase viewership. You are making a ridiculous argument.

Zero Pattern:
There is an actual concept here that may have worked if done better.

Agreed. It's just poorly executed.

Zero Pattern:
I'd much prefer to watch the more unusual event of people like porn stars playing D&D than merely ordinary individuals playing.

Do you mean unusual people like porn stars, or unusual people like porn stars? There's a difference. If you meant unusual people, then you have a point, but let's say those unusual people were famous musicians. For example: The Jonas Brothers. Would you seriously make the argument that the producers of the show selected the Jonas Brothers for a reason other than the hope that their fans would watch? That'd be a pretty damn silly argument, wouldn't it? If you meant you want to watch porn stars play D&D, then you just admitted that including porn stars piqued your interest, and my work is done.

Zero Pattern:
The thing is, people writing it off that way are not writing it off because of any content or the poor execution of the concept. They're just writing it off because of an assumption about the show's intentions.

Which are what? The show is banking on people coming to watch because of their downstairs brain and staying because of the upstairs one.
Clearly they're failing to convince a lot of people that it's worthwhile to stay. This makes them feel like their time has been wasted by someone who got them to click a link just because it features slutty chicks. This makes them feel duped. They are entitled to feel that way.

Well, either that or you and he are plants trying to direct traffic to that site. Reminds me of Amazon.com, where you see a review of a book where the (plant) person says "Yeah, that book was good, and if you liked it you'll LOVE this one!" I'm sure the producers of I Hit it With My Axe thank you for thinking so highly of their work that you feel it will drive traffic to the videos of people playing the current edition of the world's most popular RPG. Or maybe you're trying to start a useless edition war. Or some other juvenile thing. Heck, maybe you're just pissed that you didn't get to see boobies.

Hey dude, whatever floats your boat. But slamming the girls like that--didn't your mother teach you basic manners and how to act towards women? I guess you never felt any desire to play a Paladin or Cavalier, huh? Those pesky Chivalry rules kept getting in the way?

The Robo Chicken stuff looks good, if you like that sort of thing. But somehow I can't relate to the guys playing. It all seems so sterile. Where's the real people making do with whatever is at hand for a miniature? Plus, WTF is with those chairs right out of the Godfather? Looks like what Al Pacino used in his mansion in Scarface. Shit, even Tony Montana had a wee bit of coke on the table in front of him. Where's the chips? Soda? BEER!? ? Messiness? The METAL! playing in the background?!?! Where's the crude jokes and Star Wars tangents? Where's the scrounging for table space on a small table? Where's the shit that normal D&D groups have strewn about? I gotta say that, minus the women, my game looks a lot more like Zak's than the Robot Chicken people's game.

That being said, to each his own. I like the real people playing real games in their combo-living room/bedroom/kitchen, crackin' wise and playing a game with old friends, more than watching what's essentially a marketing video.

It's watchable, but it really doesn't stand out that much to tell you the truth."

See, I agree with this and with your later comment, and I think that's why people are saying they're through with the series after episode 5. What really goes on in people's minds while watching the episodes is:

"Maybe we'll finally see a tit, or some girl-on-girl action this time. Shit. Was that a boobie? Damnit! He cut away too fast! I couldn't see it. Lemme slow mo...pause...nope, no boob. Damnit! What's the sense of watching Sasha Grey if I can't whack off! Another choppy glimpse...Hold the camera still! Is that an ass cheek? No, a kneecap. Grr.. Ok, maybe next week."

Next week rolls around, lather, rinse, repeat. "Damnit! 5 episodes, 30 minutes, and still nothing to spank it to! This sucks! I quit!"

Now, what comes out of their keyboards as their reasons to stop watching are "Yeah, the video is choppy, and they're boring and dizzy people."

Yup. Whatever.

"Their awkwardness of what to do and their limited imaginations make this rather painful. In concept having stripper and porn stars doing anything is cool. But the concept falls flat on inception. We wnt to watch strippers and porn stars use their 'skills' in variuos other tasks, in this case play D&D. If they don't strip and or 'porn' (used as a verb) then there is no difference in watching just normal, actually cute or hot girls play."

Sooo...you don't like a video of strippers and porn stars playing D&D, because you don't want to watch strippers and porn stars play D&D...makes me wonder why you watched something billed as strippers and porn stars playing D&D then. I guess its one of those mysteries of life...like the Bermuda Triangle, the Sphinx, and how many licks it takes to get to the tootsie roll center of a Tootsie Pop. I betcha if you watched one of the girls attempt to lick the Tootsie Pop while playing D&D you'd like it a lot better...

Unlike you Hurr Hurr, there are a lot of people bailing after just a few 5 minute episodes. You remember a show called All in the Family from the 70's? One of the most controversial, groundbreaking, culture-shaping shows of a generation? They went the whole first season, and the network was on the verge of cancelling it. Lucky they gave it more than 20-something 30 minute episodes to find an audience and find its voice...

For the record, I think Zak is up to a total of 30 minutes in 5 episodes now.

Sounds like somebody has some mother issues, huh? Point on the dolly to where Mommy touched you...

Before you get to the point of "It rubs the lotion on its skin," why don't you go seek some professional help buddy, and not look for S&M stuff on a video advertised as a few people playing D&D.

Void(null) chimes in yet again with:

"The problem with the show is that the focus is not the D&D, or on what the players are doing... but rather the point of focus is the players themselves.

Too much "Look, we have strippers" and not enough "playing D&D." "

Seems like you're making the focus the players day jobs, while thinking of other kinds of "jobs". Other than the hostess getting her friend the drink, and a few seconds of texting, I don't think there was much else to the vid OTHER THAN playing D&D. Now it may not be the same D&D played by Funky Chickens in the harsh cold sterile environment of the Modrons, where it looks like Felix Unger arranged everyone's character sheet on the massively oversized table that wouldn't fit in any 3 rooms of my house, but it's D&D nonetheless.

"The plot WAS to use the porn stars to boost interest, devious or otherwise. They're not witty, smart people, or talented actresses: they are porn stars. That's why they are porn stats. They're in the show as a spectacle. While I don't watch these other DnD shows by PA and whoever these folks are linking, my assumption is the focus is the DnD game...not the spectacle.

As for this episode...I watched about thirty seconds. Mostly skipping around scene to scene. The DM remains in my opinion: ridiculously bad at his position.

If you really want success with this show, Escapist - get a good DM. Someone who will keep the flow of the video and conversations at a level that's ACTUALLY entertaining. You can leave the spectacle in, but don't keep it the focus."

Assuming you're right, and its all about the spectacle and the DM sucks eggs...you're right. No one in America cares about spectacle at all. Who would watch a show of any type just for spectacle? (TMZ, Perez Hilton, Reality TV Shows, Dancing with the Stars, American Idol, Tabloids, Nascar Crashes, Fox News, Sarah Palin----nothing but substance there...)

Assuming you're wrong, and you secretly like spectacle as much as the next guy, it makes me think you just didn't see the spectacle you were looking for. Perhaps you focused a bit too much on the porn stars and less on the D&D, and were left like Hedwig and his Angry Inch, flacidly wanting more...

Plus, who's a better DM? One who can wing it no matter what the characters decide to do, like Zak? Or someone who spends half the session telling the players how the rules dictate how they are able to respond to things, hence limiting their imaginations?

I like the show. I like the folks in it---they're regular people, having a good time. They have different day jobs than you and I, but who cares? If you come to the series looking to cum, you'll be disappointed. If you come to watch a group of friends playing D&D, and perhaps are able to let go of some of your anger issues with women (Dark Reaction) through doing so, because it triggers 16 years of intense psychotherapy visits, then so much the better. That's one less woman who ends up in a wood chipper or buried under your front porch.

I'm looking forward to the next episode...

Holy shit, it did get better at the fifth episode.

I'm not sure which I liked better, Sasha's attempt at pronouncing "mumorpeger," Zak's "You can control them and make them your tool, I'm sure that's not beyond you." Or the abso-fucking-lutely brilliant plan of torturing a creature by breaking it's legs when it's not present in it's own body.

Jesusfuck, I'm fucking giggling as I write this.

How the fuck would that even work, if she even *had* the will to do it?
"Tell me or I'll break it!"
'No!'
*KRACK*"AAAAAAAUGH!"

The draw of this show isn't going to be that it's pornstars playing D&D, it's n00bs playing D&D.

getting better
lol, can't Sasha just keep the spider queen as her body? :P

Ah, the blob. The classic RPG monster that no one knows how to deal it until you realize it's just a shapeless goblin.

This episode was indeed better, and actually seemed to have been shot and edited by people who are aware of how shooting and editing works. I'll give it another chance because the blog is awesome, but with ZP and ENN on Wednesdays, I'm not dying to watch another show.

I dug this episode a lot, again, the pacing was a lot better than the other episodes. I'm happy that the escapist is presenting this, and I think it's pretty interesting look at a game with a group of people with mixed experience levels with D&D.

I'm in your body, break all your legs, and then when you resume control of your body you're what...happy?

just started watching the Wizards videos! hilarious and GREAT! why is that not on here? lol.

They may not be whipping them out, but what the fuck else are you suposed to call a sexualy exploitative gimmick with no real value other than "Look we have strippers!" I honestly can't see anyone watching this for their personality's, let alone their D&D skills.

Also, just because I cant sit through watching a bunch of strippers suffering through an atrocious DM with a convoluted plot that railroads at every turn... my 18 years of playing and DM'ing is null and I'm not a real D&D Player?

Wow, and here I thought owning a copy of Gary Gygax's Chainmail made me a ubergeek or something, good to know.

Honestly this "show" has very little D&D in it, and the little that is there gets mangled between the bad editing, gawd awful music and the DM being uncreative and most of the strippers "not getting it."

You're jumping to conclusions. You're assuming that because there are as you say "slutty" females in the show they must be there only to attract males for that reason

No, I'm not saying that they are there to attract males simply because they're there. I'm saying they are there to attract males because they use their presence to advertise the show. Below every single episode of the show, they put this tag line.

It's D&D. With Strippers and Porn Stars. On Video. Every Wednesday. Featuring adult film performers Kimberly Kane, Zak Sabbath, Mandy Morbid, and Satine Phoenix, with a stripper named Connie, and a hairdresser named Frankie. Guest-starring Sasha Grey.

I noticed they didn't say "with strippers, porn stars, and a hairdresser". If they didn't think the porn stars would attract viewers, they wouldn't place them so prominently in the advertising. You advertise shows to attract viewers. If you're aware of another use of advertising, please let me know.

Zero Pattern:

And you can prove that? What's more likely, a cynical entertainment executive trying to draw in viewers with an appeal to sexuality, or what you just said? Before you answer, I would remind you of the completely unnecessary ass shots in episode three.

Zero Pattern:
You can think and assume what you will, but it may not be the case, and writing something off because of an assumption about the shows intentions, rather than the shows content doesn't make much sense to me.

This is clearly using the porn stars to create interest. I don't really see how you can honestly suggest that this show would be featured content on the Escapist without them.

As for "assumptions", I checked it out initially at least partially because of my assumptions, and so did most of the people who watched it. I don't think there's anything wrong with using sex to advertise as long as you have a good product underneath. My immediate thought was, "Hmmm, that's some pretty good pandering, Escapist. Wonder if it's any good."

I don't think it is.

I dislike it primarily because of the presentation (i.e. editing), but until this episode I would say that the content was almost nonexistent. The first and second episodes introduced the characters. The third and fourth were disorganized messes fast edited until about 3 complete sentences were left intact between the two of them. The second half of this one was okay. They've provided approximately 5 minutes of actual entertainment over the course of about half an hour. That's not good enough. I'm tired of it now.

I wish I hadn't watched it, and I probably wouldn't have if they hadn't used female porn stars to sell it. It probably would've been good if they hadn't let a male porn star film and edit it. So ironically, the most interesting thing about this show was also the reason it sucks.

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO....take dis thing off the escapist... replace it with Sasha Grey power hour if you must. Anything but this torturous thing

First Rebecca Mayes, then GameDogs, and now this. The Escapist is turning more and more into a giant hodge podge of crap. This site wouldn't have ANYTHING without Zero Punctuation and the Forums.

Also, to all the people saying "This is supposed to show that porn stars are capable of regular people things too" - WHO GIVES A CRAP!? Strippers, porn stars, doctors, lawyers, athletes, store clerks, cashiers, and even your Grandma are all capable of boring regular people stuff. We know this, and no one cares.

So bleh...

The weekly themed articles are pretty good, Andy Chalk is normally thought provoking, Movie Bob is fun and the Escapist is also pretty good about snagging news from Ars, Boing Boing and Kotaku making it less likely you are going to me an interesting or important announcement.

To discuss why I think this show is the best thing on The Escapist is complicated and I don't feel like writing an essay, nor do I care if anyone else agrees with me. I just hope the show continues. I can forgive The Escapist for Game Dogs if they also bring content like this to the table.

Void(null):
Do you want to know whats going to happen next in the guy in the backgrounds comic book as well?

Couldn't care less about what happens in any of it. The outcome of the story and D&D adventure is scarcely the point. All I care about is that whatever happens, keeps happening.

LOL so does anyone know whats actualy happening in the story? I not only cant follow whats happening, most of the people seem uninterested. I dont wanta rag on your show but if there was more structure to the game then everyone fucking around, it would be not only easyer to watch but much more interesting.

You have an excelent idea here but what you need is more proporation, a tripod, a larger table, halfways serious people (too serious and it would be lame), and better editing. Im sure you had a fun time being there, but you need to remember that its a show and that entertaining the audience is your #1 goal.

I'm watching the Robot Chicken series of games, and the last post about entertaining the audience being the top goal here is relevant. The difference between "I Hit It With My Axe" and that other show is this one is a game of D&D that pretty much brought a video camera along for the ride. The other show is slickly produced infomercial for 4th Edition put together by WOTC. The more I watch the Robot Chicken vids, the more I'm digging the gonzo vibe of Axe. I just wish the episodes were longer.

The Robot Chicken show's #1 goal is probably to get people to try 4th edition, with the game itself being secondary. Axe seems to be the other way around - they're there to play a game, and if there's enough material there to make a webisode out of it, cool. And that's what I'm interested in - I want to see what a creative DM does running a real game in a real environment, without cameramen trying to hide behind parts of the room or keeping their tripods out of view. The sloppier and more organic this show is, the more I like it - the analog feel to this show stands out proudly against the corporate luster of the WOTC sponsored RoboChicken crew.

I like both DMs, but Zak beats the other guy when it comes to voices hands-down. The snooty noble, the brain dude - those had me laughing out loud. A dwarf that sounds like he's from Alabamie? Not so much. At least he didn't try the tired old chestnut and give the dwarf a Scottish accent.

My only gripe is that 7 minutes is not enough. Also, Satine's eating the banana should be in every episode (uh oh, I guess I did it now - time for everyone to get "insulted" for the site daring, DARING, to put hot women in a vid show here).

The fifth episode did deliver a change in style, offering more extended cuts rather than the early jumpiness, but it's still keeping its crazy edge.

Zak and co., keep up the good work. Escapist, thanks for green lighting this show; I can safely say I would have never come to this had it not been for making this show.

Joe - now THAT'S the way to bring it! Keep swinging for the fences!

I think the idea here is good, and it can be interesting, but the camera work and editing job is really holding this show back. It feels like they handed the camcorder to some dude who was busy watching tv at the time and the camera's batteries were, by then, mostly dead and the only batteries left in the house were mixed into the junk drawer so the guy has to constantly keep digging around begrudgingly with one hand to locate the mismatched batteries in an attempt to keep the camera running.

Get a tripod, control the kid who keeps randomly cutting at the film with his Crayola safety scissors, and you might just end up with a good show.

Hey now, I think Rebecca Mayes is great. She makes entertaining and rather well written and performed songs. Also to claim that Zero Punctuation is all the escapist has... can I assume Zero Punctuation is all you pay attention to? Have you ever, I dunno, looked at the entire front page of this site? Aside from all the articles, essays, reviews, and personal musings we also have great stuff like MovieBob's schtick, Escapist News, pretty much anything Shamus puts his name on, etc etc.

I discovered this place because of Yahtzee, but ZP only updates Wednesdays and I come here almost every day.

For those of you who don't like it, sorry it's not to your taste, but some of us are enjoying it. The more we can follow the events in the game and the players' decision making, the more we like it.

It's essentially a documentary of some people playing D&D, and as such this episode is an improvement, as promised.

Thanks, Escapist.

I watched all five of these well i say watched more google the names of the actresses in x hamesters or tube w.e and watchin that while i muted 5 episodes of this hoping to get my badge...Still no badge :/.
