Authorities Blame Games for Sword Attack

.......So...They let the kid keep his swords after he was already arrested for attacking his grandma with one?!

....What the hell, man. The kid already proved he's not responsible enough to have one. Why let him keep them?!

The article never blamed video games? It said the kid attacked his grandmothers after they told him to stop playing games, but not that the games made him attack.

It's not unusual for this site to use blatant sensationalist headlines that distort the truth of their source material to get hits on articles, so don't worry about it.

Actually, look at the headline for the news story that he linked to.

"14-year-old slays great-grandmother with sword, stabs grandmother over video game dispute"

He stabbed them over a dispute (about video games). The dispute is the cause attributed to the stabbing. Video games were only the subject of the dispute. Authorities blamed the dispute, not video games.

Games don't kill people.

Maladjusted psychopathic teenagers with swords kill people.

Abedeus:
Wait, what? How the hell did he even get a sharp weapon?

Even my katana and daggers are blunt on purpose, because it's quite illegal to buy such objects. No shop will do that, you can sharpen them, but no battle-ready objects allowed.

Really? Where do you live? I own a properly sharpened Ghurka Kukri, and I'm in Britain.

OT: Am I the only one who thought "poor dog! Getting whacked on the nose!"?

In all seriousness, anyone willing to harm their own grandmother is a grade-A dickwipe, insane or not.

When I read the title, I thought it was a parody thread. This is getting ridiculous.
They can't just keep blaming games for people's psychological problems.

Alphakirby:
To whoever thought that blaming video games was a good idea:

I mean seriously, now this is just getting pathetic.

mad825:
I blame the sword, it shouldn't have been pointy and made of out of metal.

Sneaky-Pie:
I chalk it up to either terrible parenting or the kid has something wrong with him mentally.

These. Just these.

werty10089:
Rock is the devils music! ...wait, what are we talking about agian?

And this. This as well.

If you play videogames, a CHINESE MAN DIES SOMEWHERE!

Didn't you know? Swords are an invention of video games! Of course it's their fault!

... Give it a week, it'll be on Fox News and push for another dumbass law against games will start.

Wait, isn't it illegal for a 14 year old to own a sharpened sword since a sharpened sword is no longer considered a prop? It says it's his but I guess it might(legally) belong to his parents(or grandmother...).

He probably played Die by the Sword. I knew that game had some bad influences, I used to stab my brother with a plastic sword after a few rounds in DbyS. Well, he kinda looked like a Kobold, a smiling Kobold. [/truestory]

Ehhhh... When are games going to be respected? I believe they're no more likely to cause violence than they are to cause good, civic-minded behaviour.

I wonder why the police didn't just drop him. He was shooting at them, and if the pellets knocked out windows, then they know he wasn't shooting blanks. Could they tell it was a pellet gun, or did they just show amazing control? Too bad the K-9 didn't tear into him either. Hope he goes away for a long time.

I blame myself for reading this story therefore I have something to do with this murder. Wait...I own two swords...does this mean I will kill? Oh it's too much to handle!!!

At least its different. I mean, I hear lots of stories of kids killing their parents with a gun because they told them to stop playing but a sword? At least gaming is an equal opportunity scapegoat...

On a side note I am surprised nobody is calling for police brutality. I'm by no means saying the little so-and-so didn't deserve it (in fact I think they should have let the dog maul him more) but usually when a 14 year old gets tased people bitch and moan.

Always blaming the games....excuse me as i hit my head against this wall

Of course it was the video games and not the way that this kid appears to be deeply deeply disturbed. Completely.

I'm all for the second amendment protecting our right to bear arms, i.e. pistols, rifles, swords, knifes, etc. etc., but did no one think,'Hey, this kid has no sense of responsibility with this weapon he owns, maybe we should sell it, and take him to a psychiatrist once a week, and teach him an important lesson about responsibility.' Whose idea was it to give him a second sword, when he had a history of using it in a way which was wrong?

Man the kid even hit the K9 that the police sent in with the butt of the pellet gun. This kid clearly has some mental/psycological problems that need to be looked after. Clearly the child had violent tendencies, why would they allow him to have weapons when he already assaulted his family members once.

Know what? Im wanna do something REALLY nice, like give all my money to a dogs home while staying at an orphanage to read to the children after feeding people at the homeless shelter, and ill say "Video games made me do it" and lets see if THAT makes the news.

What the fuck is wrong with you?

It was a joke, buddy. I always open with a joke if I have the chance.

Hey, police? You wanna know who to blame? BLAME THE KID WHO BUTCHERED HIS GREAT-GRANDMA!!

Now hang on here.
great grandmother= 77 years old (1934)
kid= 14 years old (1997).
2 generations between them... within 63 years.
so withn 63 years she got kids who then got kids who then got kids.
that averages at around 20 years per "mating session" I believe.
20 year olds are usually not as well prepared to have children than say 30 year olds (what with experience and stuff).
I say disfunctional family.

I like the title, it's totally unbiased and fits the article perfectly.

OH MY GOD YOU GUYS! Video games like totally caused the Crusades! I mean, like, look at all games where templars kill arabs. It's like, completely what happened in Crusades! We should, like, ban the video games or something!

[end retard mode]

Mike Kayatta:
Authorites Blame Games for Sword Attack

Actually, "article title indicates video game dispute as catalyst of an attack" is a more appropriate title.

They only point out it was the source of the dispute, not the cause of the violence. Like "man murders wife over custody issue", it isn't blaming the custody system.

But, you have my hit and my comment.

So, congrats on the successful sensationalism.

Then again, maybe "Authorites" are the people who title articles, as the "Authorities" would be police, etc. In that case, well played.

Incorrect depending on the municipality.

Also, medieval great swords are <heavy>. How the hell a wimpy 14 year old could carry it in one hand, let alone kill somebody with it.

What idiot would give a kid a sword? let alone 2. Thats all i have to say really, come on he already cut her foot with the first, surely thats a sign you might wanna take the other off him or not buy a replacement for the other.

First of all. Shit like this is why I don't pay attention to the sensationalist news reporting anymore. There is no story to this 'story'. The boy's family let him stay with his Grandmother AFTER he had already assaulted her, AND been arrested, AND been taken to the hospital, AND been released.

Anybody have a look at the original article? They quote some local nobody that had waved to the kid once. "Yeah, he seemed like a nice shy kid". Theres a picture of a sword on the same page as the news article - but they do not say anywhere on the page that "this is the murder weapon". So its more likely that someone dug up stock sword photos. If they had a picture of the actual sword, there would be law enforcement people in the picture holding the murder weapon.

So a screwed up kid assaulted his family again, that is not news. But because there was a second sword involved, and somebody mentioned the word 'videogame', now we have something. Now the titillation-driven news media perks up and takes notice.

This is not news. Go read a book.

Better yet, write one. November is National Novel Writing Month.

...

Also: the news article didn't say that the sword was sharp. Blunt force trauma works on Great-Grandmothers.

I don't know if this guy is stupid or just an asshole but the article doesn't blame video games and he did the same with the Rage article saying it completely blocked single player if you buy used instead of a small part of the game, sensationalism FTW.

mad825:

I'm with this guy. It was clearly the sword's fault. Did you know they can cut people even without swinging them?!

I say we sue the sword companies!

I don't see any mention of a medieval great sword in the article, only a large European style sword which most likely means a broadsword or longsword.

Clueless Authority Blames Unrelated Thing For Unbelievable Crime

How about we just replace all the scare headlines with that from now on? Save us all a lot of grief.

Phyroxis:
The article never blamed video games? It said the kid attacked his grandmothers after they told him to stop playing games, but not that the games made him attack. It could have been them telling him to stop watch TV or quit masturbating. Video games was not the target of this article, it just happened to be the activity that he was asked to stop.

I'm all for hating the false blamers, but this is not an example of game blaming. I think everyone is pretty clear on the fact this kid was nuts to start.

This exactly.

People here get a little sensitive whenever games are blamed for anything. Sort of reminds me of the "behead those who say Islam is violent" picture.

Uh, by great sword I meant broadsword, sowwy
