BioWare Uses Stock Photo for Tali in Mass Effect 3

Haven't played it, I do not want to spoil too much, so Thank you everyone for placing things in spoiler tags!

But when I heard about Tali's face, as a "Talimancher" I had to click it and you know what... "Bioware, I am disappoint". I just stared at that, awful picture, going... This is not my Tali! My Tali would never have hair (maybe little but not that much), she would never undress for a god damn photo! She had to study hard to just be with Shepard and she got sick from that. She would most likely die, even with all her herbal protection and whatnot in nature.

I cannot fathom what went through their heads when they made it.

"So, we blew the rest of our budget on Jessica Chobot... How should we deal with Tali?"
"I know exclaimed an idiot!"
*Googles*
"Look! Remove 2 fingers, make some funny lines, and white eyes... Oh! And LENS FLARE! That makes it spacey and totally okey to our fans and totally not ruin lore of her living in a skintight suit that cannot be removed without risking death! She loves Shepard sooo much she is willing to die to get him a photo and LENS FLARE!"
"Very good!"

I mean... It must have been a conversation for idiots!

I am still going to buy it and play it, but not until I can get it cheaply used, I am not giving Bioware my money for this Tali... And seriously, what is wrong with this article? Biased and defending Bioware? Saying it does not diminish our experience? How the hell would you know that? For me this completly ruins everything they built up to. Just because YOU do not care, doesn't mean others do care.

This is just a raging post... I needed to get it out. I am sorry for taking up space.

I preferred Tali with her mask, I had always anticipated that her revealing her face would be under whelming. BioWare dug themselves into a corner with that one

Waaghpowa:
I'm not going to get enraged about this, but it all comes off as somewhat suspicious. I just can't tell if it was intentionally done or laziness.

Actually, I really lke the images you used as an example. I agree it was most likely intentional, and since I like both IPs, it's OK for me. A part of me wishes this (both images at once) were a poster...

As for the stock images:
It doesn't worry me too much that Bioware uses them. Pretty much every company does, and at least they altered them to fit the game. It's their universe, they can decide how species look, and from what little was visible of her face through the visor (eyes and nose mostly), that's pretty much how I would have imagined her (without the skin markings, though).

What really bother me, though, is the fact that apparently there are people on the Bioware forums that actually have the time and motivation to sift through the internet searching for pictures, based on (hopefully, at least) a vague feeling of familiarity. If I had done this whenever something in a game seemed like I saw it before, I'd be unemployed, without any finished education, and probably still looking for some wall markings I saw in Battlezone 2.

To use a stock image rather than make an origanal image is simple laziness. I wouldnt be more annoyed if the image wasnt meant to mean something but it clearly is and to treat it with such apathy is insulting as I have been invested in these games and the character. Maybe they were stretched thin by SWTOR or they had a deadline to meet and this was a time saver but I still dont like it. Plus if the leaked ending is correct then the choices are very similar to Deus Ex which I hope is an accident though to not notice this and fix it before it was implemented seems difficult considering hwo well regarded deus ex is. I trust bioware but this doensnt feel right. Oh and OP can you not be so aggressive to insinuate that any criticism is just entitled whining. Bioware is a big boy and doesnt need your insults to defend itself

They shouldn't have revealed her face at all. Because whatever she may have looked like, 99% of the fan-base would have disagreed, due to their own fantasy. It was the charm of Tali(quarian in general), the unknown.

As for the picture itself, I don't know what to say. You could always see she had human face traits(to a certain degree of course) through the mask. But that picture was honestly just sheer laziness. She could at least looked a bit more alien-ish.

You know what I'm upset about with that picture?
The terrible amputation job they did on her hand and the lens flare. Original stock photo had no lens flare. WHY did they put in the lens flare this isn't JJ Abrams's movie ffs.
Other than that, eh, it's acceptable for me. She looks similar to her voice actor. I thought it was her at first, actually. The shiny sun behind her helps with concealing that. But the more I looked at it the more familiar it seemed and I found this very picture on my HD after some searching. This induced a massive facepalm.
As for the way quarians look now. Eh, I read fanfiction. At least her skin isn't purple. I'm not bothered.

I'm really bummed about Winter on Mars wallpaper I got at the end, however.
I had this wallpaper on my very desktop for a long, long time, both original and shooped with awesomeface. This made me really angry. It did invoke a sense of familiarity, but dammit, that's just lazy.
I'd rather it had the awesomeface shoop in ME3. Would match Buzz Aldrin's voiceover.
Because Buzz Aldrin is an old bag of hater punching awesomeness all on his very own.

Am I raging because Tali doesn't look like how I think she looked? no.

Im raging because the artists couldn't take a couple of hours out to design one photograph that not everyone might see.

Seriously, this looks like an OC that someone made up for bad fan fiction.

I think your all been spoilt little kids to be fair, yes it's lazy but in the end its only a face.

No matter HOW bioware went round to attack this issue, no matter HOW they designed her, how original and unique she was you would be BITCHING AND MOANING, and you know this to be true.

After every sequel bioware have made how are you not used to this yet?

Some gamers are really sad people.

all i can say is.... free advertising!
the desktop background i had since 2006 is now ME ending, awesome.
at least they bothered to play with colouration, making ME one look better.

P.S. i know advertising brings money but seriuosly? this for capcha?

RRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGEEEEEEEEEE!

If this is such a game breaker for you guys then return your game, ask for your money back and never play it again.
You wont do that? I thought not.

You guys are as bad as all the WoW players who rage EVERY. SINGLE. PATCH. UPDATE.
Usually with, "Blizz, you have ruined WoW, I am quitting and never coming back".
And these people have been saying it since Vanilla and are still playing.

As has been said before, BioWare were doomed no matter what they did. People would find something to rage over. "Sheppard doesn't fire his gun the way he's supposed to! BIOWARE HAS BETRAYED US ALL!!!!11"

My advice for all of you who are currently in tears is this;
Dry your eyes and take several deep breaths. 10 should be enough although go to 20 if you're still having trouble calming down.
Go outside for an hour or two and try to relax. Listen to the birds, look at the trees and just be happy that you are alive in this world.
Then go back inside and play ME3 and enjoy it for the great game that it is.

All this anger is not good for your health.

Bara_no_Hime:
I mean, people have been circulating a DIFFERENT fake Tali's face image made with a real person's face in photoshop for years. A few people on this site even use it as an Avatar. Why is that one cool, but this one is hated?

Yes because finally showing a mysterious character's face after years is just as important as a forum avatar.

"Statements like the above make it hard to understand exactly why people are upset. According to some, BioWare is lazy for using an image service instead of crafting the image from scratch, while others seem to use this as evidence for something else they didn't care for, like the writing. Could have BioWare have used a custom image? Yes. Does using a stock image diminish your experience of the game? No."

Really, Greg? Really? Blame the fans and claim that one of the biggest reveals in the game being done by someone with very little apparent talent with photoshop in a few min with a stock photo? And that's alright because it has no effect on your game experience?

As someone who really likes Tali... I don't really mind this. To be fair I always pictured her as a bit of a space elf and as someone pointed out on a thread way back when, this is a good way of preserving the veil of mystery around her while giving us and idea of what she looks like. True it's far from perfect but frankly I can live with it.

Dexter111:
the fact that you need to pay ~870 dollar if you want to really get the complete game.

Okay, i know that this thread is both 4 pages long and that was a very minor part of your argument, but SERIOUSLY?

Does your complete games come with a figurine, toys (whose bonus can be earned after one match in multiplayer, in game), an xbox controller, a headset, a mousepad, a messenger bag, (whatever that is) an iPhone case (which you should already have), and a KB/M? Those things take up 100% (well, 80%) of that figure.

And really, would you count those part of the "game"? Yes they give you a collector assault rifle in the multiplayer, but guess what? You only need one of those, not eleventy billion.

Discounting all of that nonsense, you come to the much better number of $104. Yea... Not that much to be up in arms over. Considering the "base" game in that was $80.

God that link/argument is stupid. Are people so annoyed at ME3 that they will actually think that this is a real issue? It's a good game, calm down. (i haven't reached the ending yet, nor have i had it spoiled, so i can't comment on that, but as for the rest, it deserves the 4.5 the escapist gave it, but lowered by .5 of a star for a completely different reason)

Now, if you want to quibble about how Tali doesn't look like how you imagined her, well, you might have a point there. Perhaps characters who are masked should stay that way. I'm looking at you, Samus Aran.

You are letting your opinion get into a news article again. If you have an opinion, make an editorial or leave it in the comments section. I don't need the reporter's take on a story when they are reporting it. This is why I have trouble taking game journalism seriously.

Either that or it's an inside leak, you never know since it was posted shortly after the game released.

If you would actually read the comments against the picture you would realise that no one is really angry more like annoyed that the developer that they love could be so lazy. Just think back to a time when you were upset about a piece of media and be a little more understanding.

They're just trying to be Destructoid, did you see the really poor humor they started to use in news pieces after the redesign?

Who cares? Seriously, what kind of complaint is this. Why not complain about how the Illusive Man looks like Martin Sheen? Why be lazy and model the face ingame after the voice actor rather than just go and generate a new face?

I mean, come on. There's no advantage to them doing anything else, and it's makes absolutely no difference to anything. Sure, it's fine if you've got some arbitrarily objection to Quarian faces looking even remotely human like, but a face is a face. Big fucking deal. Complain about something where it would actually made a difference.

I have no problem with whole stock photo thing as a stock photo what I am annoyed with is the poor use of the photo. I really do expect more of a studio like Bioware. They have really fucked up canon and fluff with this picture so hard they broke the fucking fourth wall to pieces, as I've said before if this true it is like something out of Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

Could they not have gotten artists to do a graphical representation of it in game instead of straight in? Could they not have changed the background so it is a ship instead of planter with plenty of bacteria waiting to kill this person?

So many things they could have done to make this ok but they took the lazy route. So no not everyone annoyed about this is a Talimancer or Anti Biodrone I am just annoyed that they fucked up a stock photo so badly. Come on I can't and know I am not the only annoyed with how badly Bioware has handled their own canon?

Because that is a normal enough thing to do, is rendered with the game's engine and doesn't give the two fingers to the game's lore and canon. I'm annoyed they didn't take the time to render the photo in game and change the background to a ship.

It doesn't matter what you package it with, fact is they are all part of the game, if you package it with buying a car or a private jet to get all the "content" and there's no other way to get it then that's the price for it. Also as far as I understood it you get the "Collector's Rifle" with one product and its upgrades with the other 5 or 6 so that counts, not only that but the price is actually even higher because the guy that wrote that article forgot the "Exclusive Pre-Order Boni", so you'd have to buy the game about 3 times from different places to get it all.

I'm finding it hard to get angry about this. Yes it seems kind of lazy to give a character that they knew was loved that kind of treatment but honestly anything they did would have been insufficient for the "fans". I was going to elaborate about the "talimancers" and all the complaining but honestly, its been done.

Hey, this insulting thing is fun!

Okay, now imagine this - they suddenly reveal that, let's say, Batman is a transgender. Or that Spiderman has transformed teeth into spider fangs. Doesn't change what the character does or his history, but it does leave a LOT to discuss from angry fans. People that didn't care about the character then, won't care later. And something tells me you simply shouldn't talk about things you don't care about.

If I had to guess, I'd say they asked everyone to create their own version of the Tali portrait and then picked the one they liked the best. They just didn't know that the one they picked was based on a stock photo.

I don't know what happened, of course, I'm just speculating. It seems the most likely reason to me.

"Oh, so they just raped half of the lore, so what, it doesn't affect you."

We must be very thankful to the people who wasted their money on this shittastic excuse of a book, so we didn't have to. Otherwise, who knows what kind of crap Bioware would've retconned into the game.

I guess the fact that Miranda, standard male Shep and many other characters in the game are based on already existing models is something that already upsets you, yes?

I agree though, they should have kept Tali's face hidden. Cuz, as usual, this is a no win situation. Regardless of what they had done, people would have complained and bitched.

Stupid to cave to all the fans who demanded a Tali face reveal.

I have not played ME3 and I did not look at the "major spoiler" image, but please, keep your personal opinion out of the news article. Why does it seem to be so hard for the Escapist staff?

Cracks me up how they couldn't even be bothered fix up her hand. BioWare Quality ™.

I don't give a shit about Miranda, and I never use custom faces for Shepard anyway.

Tali's face was a huge unknown. Shepard and Miranda were human - we all know how humans look, at least those without some horrible degenerate diseases. We don't know how QUARIANS look. And suddenly we are hit with a hot chick from stock photo on a beach or something (Tali herself said that "it will take a few years, but we'll be able to take off our masks" - that wasn't even few weeks in-game time, and that's even if you make the correct choices), with lush hair (why do quarians even have hair? hair has no purpose when your suit does all the things for you, for several generations, just like immune systems) and just few tattoos/quick photoshop modifications. Bad modifications, that looked like they took a random kid from street, gave him Photoshop 5 and told him to make her look like an alien.

I just finished that part of the story and

While I was satisfied with how she looked I did notice she looked incredibly freakin' human compared to Turians which are based on the same amino-acids. I was a bit disappointed by that. Now I see my suspicions were correct.

Oh well. I should be expecting stuff like this from EA's new cash cow.
