Valve Teases Steam Box With Countdown Timer

THAT CAT HAS THREE WHISKERS! O__O

I wonder if it really is a Steambox announcement. It would be cool if it does use a Linux kernel.

Valve intends to break the internet. Steam Box, Portal 3, Half Life 3. In that order.

Zeckt:
Half life fan's have suffered enough. Please, please don't let us down. we neeeeed half life 3!

You'd suffer less if you stopped assuming it was coming every six weeks.

Will it play any of my existing Steam games? My guess is no.

SEE? Valve can count to 3! They're counting to 3 and counting to 3 all over the place and look how they count to 3. Lets see...

3 "C"s, Cardboard Cat looking at a Controller. Cat has 3 whiskers on one side. The controller has 3 buttons. And 3 announcements in 3 days.

HALF-LIFE 3 CONFIRMED

:P Although for once that might actually end up being true.

Jokes aside, I'm guessing it'll Steam box and probably one/several of their "3" sequels as launch titles? There's quite a few possibilities..

Half-Life 3/Episode 3
Portal 3
Left 4 Dead 3
Team Fortress 3

Hmm...which one...

I'm betting that 2 of the announcements are the Steambox and Source 2.

This would be a console I'd buy :D

Now the only thing I need is for SNK to patch KoF XIII: SE so that it wouldn't crash, and you got yourself a customer.

Andy Chalk:
There's also a silhouette of a cat eyeballing a controller that looks suspiciously like a sandwich. I have no idea what to make of that.

Oh, Andy....

OT: This may be very interesting. If there is a steam box coming that will actually run a game at a low price, colour me extremely intrigued. If it is another feature like Big Picture, I will still be interested. I've messed about with Big Picture a bit and I really like it. We'll see, maybe this will be big and interesting.

Edit: It really does look like a sandwich, wow

It HAS to be about HL3..... right,right... Seriously, it's definitely about the Steambox being announced. In a two party console market, the only way to make a dent would be to announce an amazing exclusive, and HL3 is the only game to carry such clout. Even if rushed (HA!), they'd have to announce this as an exclusive in order to sell their console.

Adam Jensen:
Half-Life 3 confirmed.

Bear with me. There's a cat and a countdown, right? A cat is the main protagonist of the infamous Schroedinger's Cat thought experiment. In that experiment there's a mention of an atom that may or may not decay within a designated time. The time required for half of the unstable radioactive atoms to undergo radioactive decay is called...

...wait for it...

...wait for it...

Half-Life!

At least it makes some sense. Unlike the simplistic nature of "3 circles = Half-Life 3" analysis.

This actually sounds more reasonable for the way Valve does throw out hints. The whole ARGs that went for years in TF2 hinting at the Mann vs Machine thing for example.

Not that I'm going to speculate for anything here.

FYI, I'm going to remember this post after the announcements. And by the slight offchance that it will be announced I will find a way to give you something for this train of thoughts.

I can't really be excited for it until I know its specs. Also, if it only runs native linux games it won't be that useful for me.
What's with all the threes? It's like they're trolling us.

Vie:

Will be locked down so you buy everything through Steam so they recoup their hardware loss with software sales.

So basically like every other modern console? Possible, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Don't care make a count down till half life 3 instead valve
I am sick to death of this radio silence for a game they would have to be so insane not to make they might nearly come back around to sanity

Im thinking this will be steam related through cloud than an actual piece of hardware. If its hardware, then i have no idea whom its aimed for, who the target market is? But if its something small that plugs into your tv and then play games via cloud. Then that would be interesting.

Or it could be making games avaliable on smart phones and tablets? Who know.

2014? Accounting for Valve-time that should be somewhere around spring 2016!

I just want to know if it's locked down to only use steam and play games, if thats the case then i'd rather buy a console.

Three announcements.

Three.

THREE.

Best part: I was listening to "All the Strange, Strange Creatures" as I read the news.

Three announcements.

1) ????? but I will eat my hat if it's hl3.
2) Steambox
3) Family sharing.

DazBurger:

I'll be very disappointed if the countdown isn't extended at least twice. "Noon Monday? We really meant sometime in the afternoon on Wednesday... Wait, make that Thursday". :P

I get the feeling that Valve is having a go at us, with all the "three" imagery and all.

Li Mu:
HL3 surely has to be a release title. Otherwise we have a console with NO GAMES! Nobody is going to buy a console to play 2 year old games. Speaking of which, hey Valve, how about releasing some GAMES! Remember those? You know...those things you used to make that were pretty damn good. How about giving us some new ones.
I know you all run on Valve time, but surely the idea is to bring out more than one game per average life-time.

Pretty sure they just officially released what has become their biggest/most played game on Steam in Dota 2 just a couple of months ago.

Please come with that trackball controller!

Could also be about that family game sharing thing they announced a few weeks ago. The beta for that was supposedly starting soon.

But here's hoping for Steam Box.

Zeckt:

It's time to let go and to accept the truth: Half Life 3 is a figment of your imagination, a manifestation of your own desires for answers and closure. But it's not going to happen, there is no answers or closure to this story. It hurts, i know it does, but it will hurt more if you keep holding on to something that simply doesn't exist...Half Life 3 won't happen. It will never happen.

So, does anyone else think that after the second announcement, the timer for the third will just say "When it's ready", and Valve will refuse to comment or mention it again for a decade or so?

Valve is trolling the internet. That time of the year again?

DelinquentTurtle:

Nah, that didn't happen. You imagined it.

It won't be Half-Life 3.

Because they would fuck with us like that.

They would.

They would fuck with us like that.

Genocidicles:
Three announcements...

Three day countdown...

On a less serious note, Ricochet would make a fantastic game mode for TF2 with everyone playing as some horrific pyro/scout hybrid. Double jumping and airblasting away across the platforms.

Half-Life!

At least it makes some sense. Unlike the simplistic nature of "3 circles = Half-Life 3" analysis.

I just realized that the cat is staring at a controller with 3 buttons on it.

O__O

OT: I don't know if I can wait nineteen more hours! I'm REALLY curious! D:

Gabe announce Half Life 3, exclusive to Steam Box. Gabe sits back and enjoys the view as the world economy breaks down due to the otherworldly demand for Steam boxes.

Two-part question! Will I be able to play Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines on it, and will it have mod support?

Oops.

CriticalMiss:
Hmm, the cat and the controller look like they are made from carboard.

Cat
Controller
Cardboard

Three Cs! And three As! AND THREE Rs! Three threes means Half-Li...hold on there's four Rs. Nevermind.

I get the feeling that the part about 'adding you to the design process' is going to mean THERE ARE THREE Os! Half-Life 3!

Like to add that the cat has 3 whiskers.

Just throwin' that out there. Somehow I doubt any of this means anything, but it's fun to pretend, hm? :)

Edit: someone beat me to it. Dag.

Am I the only one who thinks that having the title "Valve Teases..." over an image of Gordon Freeman is kinda evil?

That being said, as an old-time PC gamer who builds his own rigs... I have zero interest in the steambox. But I do see the appeal among the console crowd.

Just had a crazy idea... Wonder if the steambox won't be a mini-pc, but rather a streaming platform, similar to the Nvidia Shield, but without any processing power of it's own, that connects your PC to your TV. And, boy, would that be silly.

love that image.

and it seems that steam is after all determined to bring us... something.

while unlikely, if HL3 is a launch title i think steamboxes will outnumber other consoles 2 to 1.
