What would nintendo need to have to get you buy a Wii U?

Already buying it like a smart person. At least Nintendo understands the importance of physical copies and won't push this 'no used games' crap.

Smash bros. That's the one game i'm looking forward to, however there are plenty more that i want and intend to get.

Despite all the bullshit nintendo gets, their consoles are solid and have a lot of good games on them. You don't need to have super duper fancy graphics to have a good game (If you think that you do then you're a fool, a moron and plain stupid. That's not my opinion either, it's a fact.)

An interesting zelda/mario game.
A super smash game.
a mariokart game.

that's all.

-Controller that allows developers to map so many more controls than the norm, basically letting the wii u have the functionality of a PC keyboard.

Not a good idea when you're supposed to hold the damn thing in your hand rather than having it on the desk in front of you. Gimmicky and stupid design.

-Other new consoles rumored to have the worst DRM managable

Nintendo consoles have always been DRMed out the ass, too. This will not change. Strawman.

-Wii U is bad because it's gimmicky!

Jack can't play Zelda because of a torn rotator cuff. Reviews say he didn't miss much anyway.
Farms Metroid out, headed by the same person who already crapped on the franchise once with Metroid: Fusion.

Yes. Gimmicky and crappy games.

First, the kinect, and the move. The next consoles will have a much bigger focus on those, basically riding of Nintendo's success.
"We are going to be making a new kinect halo! Bad thing that anyone with a small house, any disabled person or any person who doesn't want to look like a massive arse."
Second, it has been said by pretty much every site that the controller is really comfortable, light and ergonomic. It's not the unwieldy piece of shit you are saying it to be, at least use the bloody thing before complaining about it.
Finally, by the same compatibility I mean that you could easily switch between hundreds of weapons whilst in game, not having to use a rather bad button combination that other controllers have to use.
Innovation in the gaming industry does not equal gimmicks, if Nintendo just sat on their arses and made a DRM infested console with the exact same controller as the other consoles then where would we be now?

Also, do you have to be online to play on the Wii? NO! Can you buy used games for the wii? YES! Is the Wii the most easily modded console available? YES! Nintendo just needs to improve it's online and it'll be fine.

They actually are making a smash brothers game for the wii u, it shall also be made for the 3ds. If they can get more characters such as Phoenix Wright then I shall jizz in my pants.

Definetly a new Smash Bros game, and maybe a cheaper, alternative controller(all the better to play said Smash Bros game with).

Knowing Nintendo there will probably be some sort of way to play with your gamecube controller or wii controller. Also there's a confirmed Smash Brothers game coming out for the console!

Mind control.

I will buy a Wii U; I'll grab it around Q2 2013. Smash Bros 4 sold me; but, even with that, I'm not pressed enough to run out and pre-order it. Besides Smash, all I hear is Pikmin, more Mario, more Zelda, more "same-old Nintendo". Those games are great, whenever I hear "New game for Wii U confirmed" I just sigh knowing that it's either a sequel, or a spin-off of a franchise.

I have a PS3, and while having skipped the Xbox 360, the next Xbox will probably be my next console I buy as I wait for the PS4 to follow in 2013/14.

Nintendo:

- Paper Mario 3 (Wii U). The Thousand-Year Door is my favorite gamecube game.

- HD. Whether it's 720, 1080p, I don't care. Graphics aren't important to me.

- Free Internet browser with an optional subscription plan for additional content.

- A "new" IP, developed by Nintendo's first party studio.

- Blu-Ray player. USB ports.

- A new IP from Monolith Soft/Mistwalker/Square Enix.

- An online system that uses username IDs and avatars. You can download demons, purchase digital versions of retail games, stream music/video, and socialize with other users. No more "Friend Codes" just something akin to PSN; taking some elements from XBL, such as the dashboard.

- I don't care how many ports are released. If there's a version on the PS3, or if the next Xbox is backwards compatible than I'll go there first. I'm tired of playing nothing but "classics" and re-treads from Nintendo.

galdon2004:
I probably will not buy a Wii-U. I saved my money and bought a Wii when it first came out, because it was the innovative one, and the only one priced reasonably. Then not only did they fail to deliver hardly ANY good games on it, they deliberately WITHHELD good games from being released here until the fans practically went to war over it.

I've preferred Nintendo for a long time, but after that, I'm skipping them until they prove to me I can trust them again.

Pretty much how I feel these days too. I've had every one of their consoles since the NES, bought a Wii at launch, and they've pretty consistently been at or near the top of my favorite game companies since the 80s just on the strength of their first-party games. My similar experience with the Wii over the past few years is part of what's turned me from a multi-system gamer who preferred Nintendo to an almost PC-exclusive gamer at this point.

As a result, I have no plans to get a Wii U unless something completely unexpected happens to change my mind. That won't stop me from using my girlfriend's if she gets one, though; she's been much happier overall with the Wii than I have and has more games for it than I do, so I guess they're doing something right.

Palademon:
They've already done it.
They said it will have the inevitable Smash Bros. title.

... FUCK. Damn you, Nintendo, I was going to boycott this console! Why do you have to put the only good fighting game I know onto it?! Okay... just remain calm... they don't have many more Nintendo characters left to insert into SSB, so I'll eventually be able to continue boycotting Nintendo... Right?

What will you gain from boycotting a console that has been said to have no draconian DRM, new innovations and fucking Smash Bros! If you are going to boycott something, at least do it to the companies that have actually done something other than appeal to those dirty casuals.

Never said I bought a Kinect or Move, and never said I was buying the other Next-Gen consoles, either. The title of this thread is specifically about the Wii U.

Second, it has been said by pretty much every site that the controller is really comfortable, light and ergonomic. It's not the unwieldy piece of shit you are saying it to be, at least use the bloody thing before complaining about it.

I did use it. Except, back then, it was called a Game Gear and it was uncomfortable even then, before my old-man hands had been stricken with RSI.

Edit: Okay, that's not entirely fair. The Game Gear wasn't larger than a standard CD Rom drive.

Innovation in the gaming industry does not equal gimmicks,

No, "innovation" does not equal gimmicks. Shoehorning "innovations" in where they don't need to be or serve any purpose (Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow), poorly implementing innovations (Metroid Prime: Hunters, Zelda: Phantom Hourglass), and forcing them onto the player with no alternative support for standard controls (Both Wii Zelda games) is what makes it a gimmick.

Umm... so what? Do you have to be online to play on the Xbox360 or the PS3? No. Can you buy used games for both of them. Yes. What's your point here?

Do you honestly think that if the stupid rumors about blocking used games are true for MS and Sony, that Nintendo, who have been crazy hardcore about access control since they were the only game in town (no pun intended), would be far behind? They have ALWAYS made DRM-infested consoles. You must be too young to remember when they tried to sue Galoob for reverse-engineering their DRM to make the Game Genie.

YES! Is the Wii the most easily modded console available? YES!

Until they pull a Sony and force an update on a legitimately purchased game to break your mod and/or brick your console. I don't think swiss-cheese software is a selling point here. It's not like Android where the OS is set up to encourage modification.

Nintendo just needs to improve it's online and it'll be fine.

I'm glad you're happy with them. I don't care at all about online support, so improving its online is a non-starter for me. They have far greater design and philosophy issues to address if they want any more of my money.

Wait... What? No... No, please no... Not the 3DS... Please, god, not the 3DS. Why are you doing this to me, Nintendo?! (to quote Freeman's Mind) I DON'T WANNA BE A SCHIZOPHRENIC!

I have read that the Wii is weaker than the 360/PS3. If so it will be another gen like this one where Nintendo is lagging behind.

I can also say that after Skyward Sword, my loyalty to Zelda has taken a hit and after Super Mario 3D Land, I no longer look forward to the next Mario game and that after that last 2 entries of Mario Kart, I won't buy another one, the games are too unbalanced now.

So Nintendo really has nothing to offer.

Moar JRPGs and to be honest out of all the next gen consoles seen so far taking rumours as truth the Wii U is the one I might actually get if any.

First party games at least as good as those that have been on Wii. With just that I'd be sold.

Support for Windows 7, upgradeable graphics cards, mouse-and-keyboard controls, and....well, actually, pretty much it'd have to be a prebuilt gaming PC.

Because! I despise what Nintendo's doing! I hate it so, so much! Motion controls?! Touch screens?! THE FUCKING WII FIT?! Why?! WHY?! WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!?!?!?!?

Ugh... But, you know what, I'm probably still going to buy it. As long as I can kick people's asses as Link with absolutely no context behind why I'm doing it (besides "they aren't you, stab them"), I will continue buying Nintendo games. ... All I wonder is, "What cameo appearances can we be expecting from non-Nintendo characters." Also, I don't care about the console itself. As long as I can use my old Gamecube remote or the game's still good, I'm game. If not...

... Then Nintendo might never live to see Episode 3. You know exactly which episode 3.

Not sure if you're joking or serious :P But anyway, touch screens aren't that bad really. Just think about it, in Zelda you had to always go into a menu, pick what you wanted to put on 4 hotkeys then if you wanted to change it you had to go back into another menu. With this you can just have the menu on you at all times, with it not breaking the action at all. Also, it's much more than just a simple touch screen, have you seen the fact that you can play the whole bloody game on the screen! So you can play it even when your annoying family are in the room!
Knowing Nintendo they will have support for a crapton of controllers, probably even gamecube.

Rename it so that it isn't named after the sound ambulances make?

For me it's simple: release it. I have NEVER bought a Nintendo console that didn't end up being my favorite console for the generation, so I doubt the Wii-U will be any different.

... Good. I this pleases me.

good third party support, the fact that almost everything worth playing on the wii came from Nintendo was not good for anyone, and I hope they don't make the same mistake again.

Also earthbound wouldn't hurt, you know, if Nintendo want us all to love them again.

telocaster:
For me, they would need at least three out of these seven things:
- High Definition Graphics (all but confirmed)
- Wind Waker on the virtual console
- Pikmin 3 (Announced and more info will be given at E3)
- An adventure game like Zach and Wiki that uses the tablet controller well
- A remake of Metroid Prime. By remake I mean the Halo Anniversary treatment.
- A new 3d mario game without the Galaxy
- A shiny new IP that is unique and fresh

For me they would need these things.

No mario or metriod or zelda games.
High Definition Graphics
and the ability to play all the games on my computer.

(I personally hate consoles but I dont hate console players I get why most people dont want to fork over 2-3 grand for a decent gaming computer.)

- Sell it for about the same price as the Wii
- Have some actually decent third-party support
- Not shoehorn motion control into everything ever
- Not do with the 3DS what the Gamecube tried to do with the GBA
- Change the name so it doesn't sound like what someone who just smelled a nasty fart would say
- Package it with another, better console
-- And a high-priced hooker
--- On second thought, forget the Wii U and just give me the hooker
- ???
- PROFIT

I bought the wii. It's stayed in a storage bin once I got tired of playing brawl. I really dont see myself buying a Wii U and im a nintendo fan. I think ill buy the *new* zelda and maybe metriod after they go down in price.

I mean they have had ZERO third party support on the games I want to play. No mass effect on the wii, No witcher 2 on the wii, no deus EX, no skyrim, no arkam city, no portal 2, no alpha protocol, no sonic generations. I would be taking a big leap of faith to assume wii u will be any different

Also nintendo dropped the ball on pokemon. They didnt want to take the risk of a high profile mmo and now WoW is stealing the idea from up under them.

But you asked what they would have to do right?
Well maybe if they streamlined the controller, made it be an Ipad in addition to gaming and offered it for half the price of an Ipad

What's this about Nintendo not having draconian DRM? Let me remind you how they handle digital games. They are locked to the console they were donwloaded on. They can't be shared with another Wii/DS/3DS (like PS3/PSP/Vita) and they can't be transferred (360, once per year and PS3/PSP/Vita).

I am not saying that saying Sony and Microsoft don't use draconian DRM, just that it's not as bad as Nintendo. They all do locked save files, what the fuck is that shit all about?

That's what I thought about the N64, Gamecube and Wii. Turns out the PS1, PS2 and PS3/360 all had a better library.

3rd party support. No matter how they are recycling ideas, one company can't carry a console on its back alone.

hermes200:

They have done it for three generations now, don't expect things to change in that regard. What if they are once again, the weakest console by a huge margin? Won't we see the same third party support as the Wii had?

I am already buying one, will be waiting in line at Best Buy this fall. But it wouldn't hurt for them to actually deliver a Zelda game like they showed at E3.

Don't load the wii U with casual shovel-ware, MAKE THIS ZELDA GAME REAL!!!! Do it so I can give you all my money!

I have read that the Wii is weaker than the 360/PS3. If so it will be another gen like this one where Nintendo is lagging behind.

Nope. The Wii U is a fair bit more powerful than eitherthe 360, or the PS3. It has more RAM, the CPU and GPU are based off higher generation technology, and it will display games in true 1080, unlike the 720/upscaled 720 that the PS3 and 360 offer. Epic and Crytek have confirmed that their respective Unreal 3 and Cryengine 3 engines run on the Wii U, meaning there are going to be some damn pretty games on the system.

For myself, I'm really looking forward to it. It's hard to call the touchscreen controller a gimmick when the single most popular console of all time, the DS, uses a touchscreen, and several generations of iPhones and iPads have shown just what touchscreens can bring to gaming. If it means that gamers can use the touchscreen to play FPS games with the accuracy of the DS shooters, then fuck it, I'm in! Metroid on the DS was a revelation in how accurate a touchscreen and stylus can allow you to be in gunning down mooks.

what the PSN is doing now... if you know what i mean... otherwise, i will stick to the MS consoles...

Ok, well what proof do you have that the WiiU will be more powerful than the PS3/360? Do you know the specs? Have you worked with the hardware?

Now, here are the words of some unnamed developers:

According to some developers, Nintendo's first HD console can't output graphics that are even on par with Microsoft and Sony's current machines. Developers speaking with GamesIndustry International on Monday had more than a few disparaging comments in store for Nintendo's upcoming tablet-controlled console. "It's not up to same level as the PS3 or the 360. The graphics are just not as powerful," said one source.

Unnamed developers doesn't inspire confidence I agree but it is more than what you have isn't it. Also, Nintendo would almost seem to confirm it.

A representative of Nintendo of America neither confirmed nor denied the report for Digital Trends. "We do not focus on technology specs. We understand that people like to dissect graphics and processing power, but the experience of playing will always be more important than raw numbers."

http://news.yahoo.com/developers-claim-wii-u-weaker-ps3-360-nintendo-210201325.html

So there you have it. If you find out later this year that the WiiU really is this weak, you won't be surprised now.

However, let's say that this source is full of shit. If the WiiU is only a BIT MORE POWERFUL than the PS3/360, doesn't that make it exactly like the Wii was this gen, being only a bit more powerful the original XBOX?

I think, no matter which of us right, the WiiU is going to be a repeat of the Wii. This time though, it won't sell like the Wii. Too many people burned on the Wii for lightning to strike twice.
