PlayStation VR / PSVR 1 games will not be compatible with the PSVR 2, as confirmed via an official PlayStation podcast - PSVR2

PSVR 1 Games Will Not Be Compatible with PSVR 2

Sony had been having a pretty cool week. Its State of Play was short but sweet, with some real banger games announced. However, it isn’t all rainbows and roses over at the hardware/software giant. One of the more recent controversies was the company increasing the PlayStation 5’s price point in territories outside of the U.S. And now, Sony has confirmed on the PlayStation Podcast that PSVR 1 games will not be compatible with the upcoming PSVR 2.

Listening to the podcast at around 29:12, a Sony representative does confirm PSVR 1 games will not work on PSVR 2, as it is “designed to deliver a true next-gen VR experience.” He also points to the new controllers and eye-tracking technology to try to explain why the two formats will not work together.

Personally, I did not see this coming. I thought older PSVR 1 games would be compatible with PSVR 2. Now gamers will need two different headsets to experience two sets of software titles. And the wires of the PSVR 1 are quite numerous. I don’t know if developers on older games will update them to work with the PSVR 2 for free or if that is even feasible. It is more likely players will have to double dip on their favorite games if they get PSVR 2 editions. A huge bummer all around.
