Alright! Here's enough information here to get the ball rolling...

Mission: The SS-Aurora has not yet been completed. You are part of a skeleton crew to keep the ship safe and secure during a Martian attack. Those filthy miners are ruthless, and will stop at nothing to secure their "Independence".

Update: Well, good job. You failed your mission. The ship was ambushed. Shields failed, and the FTL engines were engaged while the ship was hit by a heavy payload Torpedo, "Sunslayer Class." Now nobody has a clue what's going on until the A.I. is re-engaged.

Survivors: It's sort of my style to keep tabs on everything you got, as well as any injuries you have in an Excel Spreadsheet. So, if you pick something up, let me know what you got. ;) This is a list of the current survivors.

Name - Nationality - Task
Dr. Iskierka Capek - American (Polish Decent) - Primary Science and Observation
David West - Irish - Security Patrol 4 (To Be Dropped to Mars)
Ace Jefferson - Commonwealth(NZ) - Entertainment (To Be Dropped to Mars)
Marcus Law - Australian - Primary Engineering and Maintenance
James Eli Stroud - Commonwealth(CAN) - Tertiary Engineering and Maintenance
Dr. Jake Gallows - American (German Descent) - Psychologist (To Be Dropped to Mars)
Johann Isaacson - German - Diplomat (To Be Dropped to Mars)
Philip Day - Commonwealth(Br) - Level 2 Cook

Spy will be chosen randomly.

"Scanning for additional life will never end, due to the integrity of my scanner systems, I am unable to provide a 30% accuracy scan of areas outside of my jurisdiction, nor am I able to provide proper ID-Scans in more than 22% of the Aurora."

Note: I haven't gotten any PM's regarding the Spy. I may very well Omit it. There will be aliens, but not the kind your thinking about...

I aim to start this Saturday.

Interested? Here's a character sheet.

If you have any inquiries, Ask! If I get enough attention, I'll start with people waking up on the Aurora. I'm hoping to get a minimum of 2 people, and a maximum of 8. If I haven't hit 8 and I started anyway, others can wake up elsewhere. If there's something you don't like, lemme know, and I'll hope to give you more insight, or maybe be swayed.

Also, looking at the tone of some RP's here, I feel this blurb is needed. You can die.
Another person can kill you, but I get the final say on your demise. If you do something stupid, then you will probably die. If I'm about to kill you, I'll try and give you a chance, but if you don't notice it, you can die.

The Spy is someone from Mars, working for Mars. The secrecy I provide to you is your defense so nobody can put you in a bad way off the bat. While you may understand the gravity of the situation, there are 7 people who may think things can still go just fine without you.

If I may ask, what exactly are we going to be doing? Trying to survive on a "dead" ship, trying to return home, etc.

Whatever your answer, I am interested. Look for a sheet from me soon.

This sound slike a fun thing to do. im pretty new to these things, so please excuse any potential noobishness. ill get on a character sheet.

Interesting, very interesting.

I am thinking of making an engineer or science character so I would like to know the state of other technologies. Questions include:

1) Are weapons still projectile based or have we embraced the directed energy?
2) What about human enhancement such as genetic engineering, cyberware, nano-bots, etc?
3) Are computer interfaces still physical or have we cracked Holographic/Augmented Reality/Neural Interface tech?
4) What about A.G.I. (Artificial General Intelligence)?
5) What level of "realism" are you going for? - ("Space Fantasy" like star wars, "Science Fiction" like the works of Asimov, "pants on head crazy" like Doctor Who, or something in-between)

Grim327:

Thanks for the interest!
I want to leave it open ended. So, it'd be up to you. I will state that while half of the ship will be AWOL, if the engineers are crafty enough, you might be able to get it moving. Returning home though? The likelihood of such an event are a billion to one. I'm also thinking of including an alien race I thought of back in my HS days.

Sigma Castell:
This sounds like a fun thing to do. im pretty new to these things, so please excuse any potential noobishness. ill get on a character sheet.

I'm glad your interested! If your new, I simply ask for the following:
Think of a character everyone can wrap their mind around. If you really enjoy writing, this isn't a problem.
Mother of god, Proofread... Catch everything and use MS word if you feel you need it. My spelling and grammar is normally quite atrocious, but I spend 5 minutes going back before every post.
Inquiries? There's no such thing as a stupid question. If your shy about asking it. PM me instead.
Did I mention that the Escapist has some amazing reading material regarding RP's? Read up on it, It taught me a lot too. I loved that shit.
Most importantly, Have fun.

Thanks for the interest! ^.^ Here are your answers, Signoir!
1. While energy-based weapons are available, their use is largely in the private sector and in homes as a decoration. Energy weapons are purely negated by the PSS, so no military will adapt them. Explosive shells are used by ships, and more personal hollow-point rounds are used in armed combat in space. On the ground level, it's whatever fancy bullets you can lug around. Fear of a hull-breach has stinted the need for boarding parties.

2. Advanced prosthetic exist. TBH, I'm aiming to stay away from Cyberpunk, as, well... It's what I'm writing about 100% right now. Nanites are new, and the most you'd see in this is the presence of Nanites to aid in curing the incurable, and prosthetic limbs that appear and act extremely similar to the real thing.

3. Primarily physical. Again, the private sector is really going places, but on the Aurora it's mostly touchscreens and Voice commands. I'll get back to this... Next question, actually... Oh! I almost forgot, Augmented reality's a big thing! It's one of the main features of HUD-Gear, and that if your ever confused about the inner workings of something, this is where Augmented Reality comes in. (The company I work for refers Augmented Reality as Mixed Reality, so if you see that, that's why. I'm just used to saying it.)

4. Artificial Intelligence exists. It's sentient as well, and will become your best buddy! The other half of the computing side of things will be done with assistance from the Ship's AI, and it's smart enough to even give recommendations to the commanding officer, and automatically get something you may need, when you need it. (IE: Medicine at home when you complain to a colleague that you have a fever.) The AI's pretty good at carrying a conversation with you as well, but if you use big words, or bad grammar, you can confuse it.

5. I'm not familiar with Asimov. Sorry... I've been thinking on this for quite some time and I feel I've sort of adapted to a more realistic sense of things. No magic, force, or what-not. You don't instantly turn into a Popsicle or a little ball of fire in space. (But your probably not gonna do much for a while if you survive.) and I'd say the PSS is the least realistic thing I've included, because... It made me think of Flashback, waay back in the genesis days. I wanted something like that. Where stupid mistakes and not being careful gets you killed, but knowing what's up and bein' smart will keep you happy. If you want something to compare all of this to, I'm a fan of Firefly.

---

-----

---

Keeping in mind, on the getting you killed part... Most RP's I run end with 4 or 5 people dead. The PSS is also a response to that. Please don't die on me. D:

I'll see if I can get on designing a ship map for you. It'll give you some ideas of what things should look like BEFORE the incident occurs. After, well... I'll let you find out.

So, here's a list of areas within the ship, as well as the general area that they would be located.
There are 5 "Decks" on the ship. Most of these major areas cover a few decks, but some are spread all around...
They are also split by the type of areas they are.

A: Consists of Engine Rooms and the like. Near the back of the ship.
B: Consists of Reactor chambers and electrical power backup. Smack in the middle, rear-ish of the ship.
C: Consists of Information Technology and computer systems rooms and labs.
D: Consists of Food... Growth, to storage, to eating. Food! Spread all around the sides and midsections of the ship.
E: Consists of Cargo and security. Typically on the underside of the ship. Note that ammunition's storage is an automated area of the ship that supplies ammunition to the ship's guns.
F: Consists of Personal Quarters and relaxation. Relaxations range from the Gym to break rooms where you can get a coke. These areas are everywhere.
G: Consists of Command rooms. All in the front with the exception of the Secondary Command bridge to be used for emergency situations. It's seated a little bit inside.
H: Consists of Science, Medical, Misc. Note that the Tramway is offline. Not built yet.

The ship is roughly a KM and a half long. It shouldn't take you forever to get from the front to the ass end of the ship, but it's still a brisk walk.

A little more about the ship, in point form! :o

The Aurora cannot land on a planet, it must moor on a station.
The Aurora has escape pods and "drop pods" for planetary assaults. No weapons are on board for such an assault though.
The Aurora is able to defend itself with Flak cannons and torpedoes, however ammo is limited, and most of it has been used.
The Aurora can survive in space for 3 months before needing to Moor for supplies.
The Aurora's life support and Hydrophonics systems can extend that time limit considerably.
The Aurora needs three shifts to watch her 24/7. Right now, she has a skeleton crew. (Considerably less after this.)

Character Concept Complete!

Let me know if there are any changes you want me to make

Is there a deadline for this? I definitely want to be involved, but I need some time to get my homework done before I type up a character sheet and read everything in this thread in detail.

How about "socialist-anarchist utopia" like the Culture?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Culture
(Humanity is ruled by AIs that are millions of times more intelligent than a person, contained as sentient spacecraft with their own ecosystems and human populations in the millions or billions. There is no money due to advanced manufacturing that can give everyone everything they want at no cost, and no laws because the machines control everything. Your life consists of virtual reality, group sex, and doing anything you want because everything is wonderful. Also, they have the best ship names of any setting ever.)

I'll keep paying attention :P

I'm interested. I will have a complete character sheet up by tomorrow ^^. Firstly, a question about my job though, does musician count?

Secondly, are the perks legitimate? Although I can swap them out, I'm sure we can work something out because while I'd hate to be OP I don't want to lose 'em either because I feel it sort of ties into his character. Up to you completely though ^^.

I'd say the Deadline is when I get 4 people. In which case, the AI can "find" four more living people once it's reactivated. I feel like I'm getting some interest, so waiting is not a problem.

It's also that time of year. (I think, Art seems to be ahead of everyone else when it comes to exams.) So take your time, We'll wait for ya. ;)

I think I can work that in. Keep in mind though, the definition of winning and losing here...
You "win" if everyone is doing okay. All of you, not just you.
You "lose" if anybody dies. Including someone you may not like.

Your in a big ship that normally requires a very large amount of people to run it. It would be tragic if you were even more short-handed.

Also, for those long trips, entertainment is needed. Musician sounds good. :3

Your bio doesn't need to be massive, but I do like to see these things. :3

I need to leave a note here, regarding your choice of non-standard weapons.

Due to the fears of internal ship damage, under no circumstance are you permitted to carry ammunition for your personal firearms onboard. You will be tasked with being a Security officer, but while you do, you are required to use your Culler Standard issue firearm. Should the unthinkable occur, you are allotted two cylinders for your revolver. (10 rounds) and one magazine for your rifle (5 rounds) until deployment on Mars, the supplies will be dropped with you.

The PSS will still be able to stop your Magnum rounds, but your Sniper Rifle rounds will still be able to do some damage on the first shot. I'd prefer to keep the Sniper a long-barreled Bolt-action. Your choice the type of rounds for each weapon. (HP, ST, or FM. HP is good on organics, FM is good on robotics. ST is Standard.)

As for the background for Asclepion...

OBJECTIVES:
The Aurora is to establish a foothold on the darker side of the Martian surface to start the end of the war. Once fully deployed, she will lead an attack to secure space. While the primary attack is based around the Phobos Space Station, the Aurora will disengage combat to find a suitable location. Drops will be deployed, and a base of operations will be quickly deployed.

The base's primary objective will be to hold its position until the Aurora returns with reinforcements and supplies. We aim to outnumber the Martian populace, and force surrender. If not, by 3rd deployment, which will contain vehicles to assault the primary Martian base of operations, Prabhava Mine.

Unfortunately, the Aurora is not ready. She has not been fully constructed, and lacks supplies for any engagement alone. When Mars attacked, The Aurora fled only to be ambushed by a larger force. People may come to realize that the enemy may have known what was up, and succeeded in stopping it.

Earth:
Living on Earth is easy. Mega-Corporations such as Acclimate, Earth-one, Prosperity, and Zeph-Tek make life a breeze with the invention of the Artificial Intelligence. No more will young aspiring students need to work at Tasty-Burger to fund their lives at collage. Menial tasks are all done in conjunction with the Artificial intelligence, and AI's typically become your best friend. The Educational system is repaired, and when you're out of high-school, you're able to start on your degree. In the highly practical fields like Fabrication, and Design, or in more science fields like Data management and Biological research. The massive, Mega-Corporations, as well as the Earth Enforcement Military are always looking for new blood!

Living here is pretty similar as it is today. You go to work, come home, have a snack, talk with the AI and entertain yourself and your happy family. You may occasionally see Security officers around, toting heavy weapons and machine guns, but this is to quell the possibility of any Martian activists on Earth soil, and deter any crime. Nobody seems bothered by it.

Actually, that's a lie. There are some people who are deeply bothered by the state of Earth. Anti-Corps can sometimes stage attacks against the bigger Corps, who responded with their own security. Martian activists, people who believe the war should end without a fight often cause little rampages, but these are always quelled relatively quickly, so there's no worries.

Yep, life is good on Earth, but the Miners from afar want to change that...

I'll Have David stash his Rifle past Security to be found later and the Ammo I'll go with is Standard, About resupplies of Non-Standard Ammo?

I may make minor adjustments to this but nothing major like job, perks and etc. If the quantity/quality of incidents seem a little silly, tell me so I can take them out/tone them down :P. I want him to have a tragic backstory but a believable one.

EDIT:Removed crash.

Now this looks like it has the potential to be very interesting, if there are any changes needed let me know

I'll put this up here, as this part's directed at everyone.

I've edited the first post. Hopefully, I'm not gonna confuse anyone.

Nobody's gone for the Spy yet. I'm not sure if this is because nobody wants him and think he's a bad idea, or if nobody just wants to be him and think it's a good idea. Take note that your Bio can be a lie! and that the main difference the Spy has over everyone else is that they've been born on Mars, and strongly values Martian independence. His objective is not to go around and sabotage the shit out of everything.

I'm also going to aim to start this on Saturday, or Sunday... I don't get much time to write on Fri.Nights. I'm only really gonna aim to have 8 people, as it's a power of 2 and I feel having too many people will overload and confuse things. If we start with just 4 people, then another 4 could wake up at any time.

It's not because I'm a heavy drinker on Fridays. I drink lots on every day that ends with a Y.

Ha! Nice. Silly Bio's are always good too. ;)

Unfortunately, the resupplies of Ammunition has not been loaded on the ship yet. Ten .357.ST's and Five .50.ST's are all ya get... Use them wisely! :o

You may find non-standard ammo if you look around long enough. More than likely, not for your gun, but having 9mm rounds that aren't hollow-point may be beneficial in the future.

...Did you read my character bio? The answer is in there... (Answer: single for tragic reasons - she does still wear her wedding ring though)

Pronunciation that I'm going with is:
The "Is" is pronounced like the English word "is"
The "kier" is pronounced like the English words "key" and "air" treated as one syllable (just try to say the two words as quickly as possible and you should be able to make the sound)
The "ka" is pronounced with a "short a" sound

Thus: Is*key-air*ka

She is not, but I expect this will change as the story advances.

The way I see her character is that she is still grappling with the loss of Isaac, but as the pain fades she will begin to move on. She will eventually begin to feel attraction again (followed by the emotional question of "is she betraying Isaac's memory") before finally letting him go and moving on with her own life.

At least that's my plan right now... the events of the story may change this plan (or end it considering all the lethality BeerTent has promised/threatened)

For now, you can run with whatever dialogue ideas you have, just expect your amorous advances to be stonewalled until some later date/time.

I'll give you a moment to re-think this, because I've seen this before. Having the ability to read others is purely dependent on the information that others give. Others may not provide all information necessary to convey the character's exact thoughts on the situation. Name: Johann Isaacson

Gender: Male

Age: 46

Nationality: German

Appearance: Johann has short black hair, which he wears in a compusivly neat comb-over. He is around 6ft 2in high. His features are somewhat aristocratic, but in most ways quite ordinary, save for the small scar above his left eyebrow. A hunting accident, he talls anyone who asks. He has light grey eyes, and a small silver stud in his right ear. When out of his private quarters, he will wear a black suit, with no distinguishing labels, a white shirt and black trousers. He occasionally wears a red or black tie. When around colleages, he will wear his suit unbuttoned, but when he is around 'unknowns' he will have it buttoned up.

Job: Representative of the Diplomatic Offfice

Biography: Johann was born to a working class family in Berlin. His farther worked as a Computer Technician at a Data-storage facility, but growing up Johann never showed much interest in computers, to his fathers dissapointment. Johann's childhood was spent either at the local school, where he succeeded in staying under the radar. The fact that there was somthing slightly wrong with him only came to light when he was 13, when he perfectly calmly, and withought hesitation, pushed an older boy off a bridge over a dispute of some sort. Johann was subsequently diagonsed with emotional retardation. The neuorlogical pathways in his brain which cause a person to feel emotions such as empathy and anger did not form properly. However, he was not institutionalised. His disorder was not deemed serious enough to warrant such treatment, despite the protests of the other boys parents, although Johann did have to attend counselling sessions.
Johann has shown a talent for words ever since he could talk. he has always found it easy to convince a person that his opinion is righ. As such, he lead moderatly sized gang during high school. He very nearly went 'off the rails' at the age of 17, when he began to get reports of some of his gang members getting involved with Drug dealers, through his budding network of informants. Luckily for him, he put a stop to it before it brought the police down on him.
At the age of 20, Johann escaped the criminal underbelly of Berlin, and enrolled in a Political Studies course at Berlin University.
His life looked set, until there was an incident at the apartment block Johann was staying at. A tennant pulled a knife on another, one man was stabbed, and the brawl spilled out into the corridor. Somehow, Johann got involved. When the armed man tried to slash his face open, Johann stabbed him with a letter opener (a family relic, the only one the Isaacson's had). The man very nearly died, and although Johann was cleared of attempted murder, he was thrown out of the University.
For two months he existed in a state of limbo, until he was contacted by the Diplomatic Office's Outreach Program's AI
His talent with people and natral penchant for logical and rational thinking at a time when others were panicking ensured his quick rise through the office. He remained a Diplomat for 22 years, travelling extensivly throughout the World, until he was assigned as the Diplomatic liason on the SS-Aurora.

Personality: Although Johann feels some emotions less than others, he is not an automaton. He is capable of forming attachments to people, although he will likely not show that he cares for them much. He expects them to know that he cares for them, and not need confirmation. That said, he is very good at playing the part of the charaismatic diplomat when need be. the fact that he finds it hard to feel anything other than a vague indifference to people he does not like makes it easier for him to talk to people most other diplomats would find difficult to hold a conversation with without getting extremely angry. The indifference he eels towards people he doesnt know or like is chilling, however. he does not feel a speck of empathy for them, and uses logic and facts to dictate his interactions with them. Unless they manage to get him to like them, which is not as hard as some may think. Johann likes many people, he just does not show it. He has a fondness for comedians, and will not like people who talk too much or try to get him to open up. He is naturally a secretive person to those who do not know him extremely well.

Perks/Flaws:
Emotionless(-2)(Johann will not care at all about or empathize with people he does not consider friends. He would stand there and watch them die unless there was a reason to save them, a logical one that is. He will also come off as cold and uncaring to most who meet him.)
Charismatic Stallion(+1)(Johann is exceedingly good at bending people to his point of view. He wins arguments most of the time, and has a talent for bluffing his way into past guards into ares he really shouldnt be in.)
Knife-juggler(+1)(Johann has a natural affinity for knives, and can throw and wield them with unerring accuracy)

I'll give you a moment to re-think this, because I've seen this before. Having the ability to read others is purely dependent on the information that others give. Others may not provide all information necessary to convey the character's exact thoughts on the situation. If you guess wrong, it's there, it's done, and you won't know until AFTER the other person posted.

He's alright, I'll let him in, but I want confirmation that your okay with what I just said before I add him.

I know, I thought of that myself, the poster can change their intent as well, if they feel the urge to dupe my character. So it isn't really that great of an ability, it's just more of a character trait. I don't expect it to necessarily be all that useful in game, it's just something I want to try to run with.

EDIT: The only usefulness I see coming from it directly is it may lend my character to knowing more about everyone's past and personalities in the beginning, considering my position would I have access to such personnel files?

My character had a trait like that originally, but I thought it would be better if he could talk his way past guards, instead of being able to 'read' people. I think the idea that he knows a lot about everyone on the ship is a good idea though.

Go, Go, Go!!

I'll say yes. You've been able to see some files... If you can find them... You have yet to recompile the data and go through it. The information should be stored in your personal room. So far, you've skimmed through about 25 profiles. You might find the following names to be familiar. J.Stroud, M.Law, D.West, and A.Jefferson. Plus, the 8th, depending on if the almighty 8-sided Die says so.
