Review: Perfect Dark (XBLA)

I noticed how you didn't have Dark Sims unlocked for your review. Dark Kaze (or venge, in your case) sims are INSANE.

I like the no jumping thing, when playing any current FPS and having morons constantly jumping about, it ruins the immersion for me.

Now all we need is Goldeneye and we're set.

Kind of a quick question, does this game have split-screen multiplayer for 4 people? If so, can I add bots to a (split-screen) game with 4 people in it?

Never tried Perfect Dark before, but it is an incredible title no matter how you look at it.

They aren't ugly, they're just...retro. Though, I do remember quite a few fond memories of that game. Retro FPS...wow...someone bring back Goldeneye, drop a review there, and watch the fanboys tweak. Hehe...prox mines...

Got this game again and Im loving it
FPS now seem so casual with regenerating health in all.

As for Xbox live, yes it has it for multiplayer, and for Co-op, though im not sure about the counter op.

Susan Arendt:
Susan Arendt named her character in Mass Effect after Joanna Dark.

I named my book character after the ever lovely Miss Dark as well. Seems like Miss Dark influences more people than I thought. (now, to get those books finished/published)

I'm sure it was great in it's time (Never played it myself) but FPSs don't age well. This is no exception.

Wow, that game got cleaned up A LOT since it's debut on the N64! I remember playing 4-player deathmatch on that game, and squinting at the pixils (SDTV!). Was that block of 4x6 pixils someones head? Hell if I know! I'mma shoot at it anyway.

Enigmers:

It did on the n64. I'd bet money that feature was ported over.

(I miss the days when this was a common feature on shooters. Now, you're lucky if you get 2-player local split screen co-op.)

The only thing I always hated about Perfect Dark is that there are NO BLOODY CHECKPOINTS. You could reach the end of the level, get hit by a missile out of an enemy you couldn't possibly locate 1st time, and start all over...

Dark Angel Warlord:

if only they could update golden eye 007 and make it with latest tech and online abiliies omg that would be the halo killer

actually the guys at rare did

http://www.avforums.com/forums/xbla-xbox-live-arcade/716875-goldeneye-360-cancelled-scans-xbox-world-360-mag.html

they completed the game, had the achievements and everything, and nintendo said no and that was the end of it.

Yeah. I have...erm, fond memories of dying to the sound of Cassandra de Vries laughing while her bodyguards gun me down. That's the very end of the third mission (i.e, first mission in reverse), in case you forgot.

Quite honestly, this review can go piss off. There's a reason why the game uses the same engine, and same format. Because look what happened to Perfect Dark Zero.

That game has eaten to much of my life so glad i dont own a xbox these days
EDIT: on the death match on my N64 copy i have spent 29 days 23 hours games play on one of my profiles.

I still can't believe I missed this one back when I had my N64 as a kid. Oh well, I was too busy playing its predecessor, GoldenEye, to notice the new phenomenon known as Perfect Dark.

brabz:
Enjoyable review, and color me 4 stars for my nostalgia tinted glasses. What a great game when it came out, with a really interesting variety of weapons for the time.

Just like Goldeneye and the near-universal "No Oddjob" rule, fondly remember summer nights playing for all hours with "No Farsight"

No Oddjob rule in Goldeneye? I always encouraged people to play as Oddjob. The autoaim will automatically go for center mass, and as it just turns out, Oddjob's center mass was his head since it doesn't account for height, and hence the normal autoaim torso shots would hit right in his head. Don't believe me, take a Cougar Magnum and have Bond run at you and fire without aiming. It'll hit his chest. Have Oddjob run at you and let autoaim do it's work, it'll hit him right in the head. That's why I stopped picking Oddjob. Trevelyan was always my choice. His dark clothes blended in perfectly in dark lighting, especially in the Water Caverns, I could watch someone run right by me and come out with the RCP-90 blazing.

Oh and as far as the new Perfect Dark, it's fun so far. It's great replaying a classic, but the aiming is far too sensitive. It's hard to use manual aim since the 360 joystick hasn't been ground down due to hard plastic rubbing against hard plastic. I really like the fact that it doesn't look like a muddy pool, and the framerate is above 20fps. Whenever my brother and I get together we break out the N64 and play multiplayer Perfect Dark, so it'll be fun to try out the Facility in Capture the Flag against 8 bots the next time he comes back and see how it compares.

But still, it's great playing a slightly updated classic. It looks and runs quite a bit better, difference in controls aside. And hopefully it'll get some kids into the older games. You don't need grenade jumping and vehicles to have fun. All you need is a solid game, with splitscreen, massive amounts of weapons, and G-Bombs and one hit kill turned on so you can piss everyone else off.

I just played Deus Ex for the third time. I also re-played Soldier of Fortune and even took a look back into System Shock. But this one, tapdancing Christ this is Ugly! Don't like it one bit. If I want cool multiplayer action with bots, there's always Quake Rocket Arena. Hell, there are truckloads of open-source games that look better and probably are more fun to play.

Thumbs up for the review, thumbs down for the unappealing game.

What part in particular did you find fault with?

You are right about one thing OP....the game IS pretty darn ugly.

However PD fans will still love it.

Perfect Dark Zero was better than the first game by a factor of 1,000,000.

Perfect Dark Zero was worse than the first game by a factor of minus 1,000,000.

There corrected that for you

Zero had so much going for it, all they had to do was essentially remake the original with a new story and use a shiny engine and they would have been set.

instead, rare decided suck the Halo cock of shitiness and turned turned the respectable Ms Dark with a sense of wit into a Yankee-doodle whore (She had a tattoo on her NECK for god's sake) who reacted to the slightest criticism by pointing a gun at the person who made the comment.

damn, I hope this will come out for PC some time too, I used to own the N64 version, but let a girl I liked borrow it, and never got it back.
I'd love to play it again, especially with online multiplayer. I remember playing it in 4 player split screen with some class mates on a ridiculously small TV at a ski resort back in 2000 or so, and it was awesome. Made the entire trip worthwhile, since it started raining as soon as we got there. Playing with the game breaking see-through-walls-and-kill-anybody-on-the-map gun was hilarious.

The only reason I checked this out was because I bought PDZ awhile back and loved it for the most part, but when I talked about on here, i'd here nothing but "It was shit, The orignal was so much better, blah-de-blah-de-blaaaaaaaaaaaaah." So I did the trial version of Perfect Dark, and downloaded minutes later, it's a really good game if your the kind of person who still gets out the N64 to play Goldeneye every once in a while.

If they'd never made Perfect Dark Zero I'd probably have my dusty old pair of nostalgia colored glasses. I got the memory pak (or pack...whatever...), and I still have that and the original game, and when they were new you can bet I played them to death, knew every stage better than the features of my own face, so I'm pretty much over this.

Too bad Rare can't get it's act together on se-erm, prequels, with this rehash it seems kind of like they're riding their own coattails.

I just noticed yesterday that I turn into a VengeSim every now and then in deathmatch games o.0

Am I the only one who's a little irked that they reskinned all the characters? I really think it takes something away from the charm that the original N64 version had...

And I don't think that it's really fair to criticize the graphics of the N64 versus other systems, simply because it didn't have pre-rendered scenery. I had more trouble finding doors on games like Parasite Eve than this one.

Timesplitters is way better than Perfect Dark, and Goldeneye 64 is better than all other FPS combined. Uglier than hell, but far more exciting with better challenges, better vs mode, and better stories.

And what's more random than Baron Zamedi in an Egyptian Temple? Nothing.../thread

What part in particular did you find fault with?

It had an over-complicated cover system, the writing was hideously bad ("Shut up before I drop you like a bad conversation"? Really?), they put vehicular combat in (Just like Halo), regenerating health (Just like Halo), and it had a RETARDED story. Joanna is a mercenary who gets immediately hired by Carrington, no training ops or deployment to stop the cyborg facility (from the CANON Game Boy version). On her merry way to getting shot down over Africa, she discovers an ancient evil artifact.

The music and multiplayer weren't bad though.

I played the dame, and while it was OK, the objectives weren't clear, it was repetitive, and the aim assist was ridiculous.

Also, does anyone else think its stupid how characters in fps games always turn their guns in the direction they are turning?

Fixed it again. PDZ is far superior to the original. Do not edit my quotes to circumvent again please.

There is something that the review neglected to mention, and was the reason why me and my friends all got this game.

Perfect Dark XBLA edition comes with three goldeneye multiplayer maps and a slew of Goldeneye weapons for use in multiplayer.

Yes, you read that right. With the custom match options you can play the Goldeneye maps with Goldeneye weapons only. All you need to do is play the Goldeneye 64 soundtrack on the 360's media player which will mute PD's music, but not the weapon fire sounds and replace it with your Goldeneye music (not perfectly, but it gets the job done, and playing to that awesome Dam music STILL gets the blood pumping years later).

Goldeneye fans, this is as close as you're going to get to updated Goldeneye online multiplayer and it's worth every penny.

So if it's superior to the original, why did you leave the minus in.

and now for some friendly advice, even i know that saying "please don't do that" on a forum is an open invitation for people to do just that, just making you aware of that.

I may be a fanboy for this game, but i am a fanboy for very good reason.

This game represents a lot of elements from the genre that i miss, the health bar that didn't treat you like a pansy by regenerating.

an armory of insane guns that were all unique.

a difficulty system that added objectives that were relevant to the mission and enemies that as you increased said difficulty became smarter, faster and would even run away to call for help rather then what is done today where they get a ramped up health bar and can accurately shoot the head of a pin at a moments notice.

these are just some of the many reasons that i consider this a cornerstone of FPS society.

I got Perfect Dark a couple days ago, I really like it so far. I never played it when it was first out.

Tip: Get a head-shot during a mission and you get a shirt for your avatar. It was a fluke that I got it, cause I didn't know it existed and of course wasn't trying for it. I had been spraying and praying with an automatic gun, because I had opened a door and there were five guys behind it. Right after I killed them, I heard a guy shout behind me, which startled me(I'm that kind of gamer), and when I was quickly turning around and firing, my hand accidentally slipped slightly off the controller, causing my aim to move up some, which resulted in the head-shot.

I meant what part of the review, given that it can "piss off." I'm perfectly aware of why PDZ was shit on toast.

Oh, man, I was always jealous of my friend who had Perfect Dark. You needed that extra hardware to play it, if I recall correctly!
