Come on Doomsday Arcade 2!

I'm just saying is all.....

If there was a function that allowed me to like posts or favourite them or become a fan of them or any of those silly things, I would use that function on this post. A thousand times over.

Anyways, best of luck to the contestants. I hope I'll find the time to put something together inbetweeen exams, as I'd hate to wait another year.

Percutio:
I'm still depressed that the Pokemon guys didn't get the deal last year.

As far as I know, we offered them a contract and the show was in production, but they canceled on us because it was too much work to make it a regular show. Sometimes that's how it ends up.

Even though there's only one winner declared, we've offered to publish multiple series every year. I doubt that'll change, if there's something interesting enough.

tryx3:
How do you feel about 2-3 entries for one person? I've had a few ideas, but I end up over analyzing and thinking its a clone of something here.

I don't think there are any specific rules against it, but I can tell you from experience that you're far better off picking the one idea you think is best and focusing all your effort into it. You'll be competing against what other people think is their best work, so you should make sure that you're submitting that as well.

teknoarcanist:
Does the contest allow animated submissions? For example, an original sprite-animated series?

Yup, you sure can.

Mr.Mattress:

BTW, can we submit more then one series? Or can we only submit one?

You are only allowed to submit one entry, so make it your best!

Alpha Centauri:

I am wondering this too, as I have two ideas

Bring your best! :) If they are both good, flip a coin. One thing to remember is almost all of our video series at weekly. If you can't produce one of the ideas on a weekly basis, you may want to submit the other.

Please see above.

pilf:
I was wondering if images and names of consoles would be classed as a breach of copyright. If so I will re-think my entry idea.

Thanks in advance for your help.

If you are just mentioning them, I don't think so. If you are basing a series off of them "like Mr. Wii versus the Legion of Xbox" and they are all running around as a Wii and Xbox, then yeah, that would get pulled down pretty quick.

I am totally grabbing one of the good cameras from college. This will kick ass. been meaning to enter for years and this time I actually will.

That is what we like to hear!

Holy crud, already? It's been a year since the last one? Time sure is going by fast.

I don't think I'll be entering this year, I'm afraid. I've had absolutely no practice with animation since last year's entry, and even though I've got some ideas floating around in my head, I don't have the skill to back it up.

I can see doing video production on my course really paying off. YEAH! I've already started the script! LETS DO THIS!

Well I guess I should edit it to "Didn't take the deal."

It would have been interesting to see how they handled showing the Pokemon themselves, although part of me expected that to not happen.

Good grief, already. I've got a script ready but it'll be a lot of work to have ready for Oct 29. (Good practice though if it somehow, though some miracle, is selected, I suppose). I have access to everything except a composer. Anyone here a decent composer. Or know a decent composer. The beauty of that job is that it doesn't require you to be in the same country.

I like your contest, and will raise you one super-epic video! Except, I tried submitting said video and I got a 404 error, any help?
-Anthony

Nevermind, I figured out the problem and was able to properly submit my video (I hope you guys only get the one, correct/last submission). I had planned this series a while ago, and actually made it specifically for The Escapist. As an editor's note though, I should mention that the original cut is 8 minutes (not 5, but we cut the credits, CG intro and lines we thought the episode could do without or ones that didn't assist the story (put without do screw up pacing)). But, if you guys would like to see the 8 minute cut, let me know!

Begun working on my cartoon today, and man, I think I could honestly do a weekly-biweekly cartoon in flash now what with the way I am using it. Curious question: Are we allowed to talk about our ideas? Not as specific as possible, but kind of like vague? We were allowed to do that last year.

Mr.Mattress:

They have in years past and once it's submitted it belongs to the escapist anyway, so...why not? Here are my vague clues: Action. Drama. Sci-fi. Nerdcore. Explosions. Teleportation. Vis. Comic. The Lost Room. Xiaolin Showdown. Generally original. Epic. Writer/Director/Editor/Special FX Artist that is not normally this conceded.

So reading through the Terms & Conditions, I assume that entrants retain Intellectual Property rights this time around as opposed to last year?

I hope they're good this year.

Sure, you can chat about your ideas. Just can't post the video you a submitting anywhere.

Yup, the IP is yours.

New Question: I had attempted submitting several times and the site gave me several 404 error not found and then "Connection was reset" problems, but eventually loaded and went to the main page. Did you guys get it?

We were doing some maintenance on the servers yesterday evening, which may have affected the upload. Give it another try over the weekend, and I'll check on Monday to see if it made it.

I have registered! (I'm just glad this name hasn't been taken. I'd have been very sad.)

I have a specific question about the consent form that I didn't see answered here. I'm something of a one-man operation, but if I were to have someone else get involved and had them sign the form, could I (the sole producer) also act as the witness, or would I need a third person to act as the witness?

I've made a few films and stuff, and getting me and one other person together at the same time is seldom a problem, but getting three people together can be a challenge sometimes.

Percutio:

This, really the pokemon thing would of beeing awesome in my opinion. Ive not really been into the goodknight quest...

Im hoping for a Doomsday Arcade 2 or something of the sort.

TimeLord:
Come on Doomsday Arcade 2!

I'm just saying is all.....

Doomsday Arcade 2 would be epic win, but I am not sure the Escapists want's to do a DA 2 because they had a DA 1. (I have an Internet Friend who's doing something similar, a show about guys who fight Video Game monsters that get into the real world)

I myself don't want to spoil my own show, but I'll tell you guys the premise: Internet Culture meets Team Fortress 2.

Are we allowed to use excerpts from films or gameplay footage? Naturally, I'd be sure to credit them to their respective owners, but I worry I still might be breaching copyright laws.

Five minutes huh? That's not very long. I suppose it's because someone has to actually watch all of the entries, but damn.

Is there a buffer zone before a video is long enough to be disqualified? 'Cause I'm running awfully close to the limit right now, and it would greatly ease my mind to know that if it comes out to 5:03 I won't have to go back and re-record.

It would have been interesting to see how they handled showing the Pokemon themselves, although part of me expected that to not happen.

Just to let you know Percutio, it was a lot of work in and of the fact that our producer for Pocket Monsters left us in the dark for about 6 months on release dates, budget and other such information that was necessary for us to continue the filming. We submitted a 20 minute second episode after signing the contract and I believe it took a good month and a half before any response was made. I tried e-mailing and calling several times to ensure WE STILL HAD A SERIES while the filming for Episode 2 and 3 took place, and for 6 months the budget money came from....my pocket.

So, we did in fact cancel because it was too much work.....and that is in fact how it ended up.

Fortunately, we've decided to make the series on our own....without a Producer....or a contract....

But on another note...I'm excited to vote for another viewer's choice!...So they can have "bragging rights"

Oh yeah...

--"It would have been interesting to see how they handled showing the Pokemon themselves, although part of me expected that to not happen."--

In episode 2 we revealed a Bulbasaur, a Weedle, a Charmander, and several Beedrill....and they were badass.

Update: Tried submitting twice over this weekend and it didn't work either time (I attempted to upload and after about twenty minutes got an error)

That's in fact awesome. Is there anyway to view the second episode?

I'm sure plenty of people from this site are still interested.

You would need someone else to act as a witness. If they are under the age needed to be in film, the person's guardian/parent would have to sign.

It's a grey area and will depend on what the images are. Unskippable uses cut scenes directly from the game and that works out just fine.

We are working on that for you as I type. Please stay tuned.

I'm wondering about file types for these movies. For instance, I'm using Fraps to capture video off a game and it gives a .avi file type, but it also is an insanely huge size file. I can fix that by throwing it into windows live movie maker and that brings it done by quite a bit (since 200mb is size 'limit', this is kinda a must). However, windows live movie maker only exports in .wmv format. I don't know a whole lot about playing video online, so I don't know what file type it should be in to work with your guys stuff.

So, more to the point, what file type's do you guys use? Can I use .wmv or does it have to be an .avi or something?

.wmv or .avi would be fine, whichever is easier for you. However, the bigger file sizes sometimes are more difficult to download, so if .wmv makes it a tad smaller, I would suggest that.

I've got the same question about time: My current cut is a little over 6 minutes (originally cut from 8) as I thought I could cut out unnecessary lines for 5 minutes, but found out it's incredibly difficult because of how fast the series goes anyway. Would you accept something that's, say 5:30, 5:45, 5:59? (Youtube used to defined 10 minutes as 10:59 and 29/30 frames)

I have a couple questions. First off, I've been assuming that it's not okay, but I figured I'd ask anyway, is old video game sound effects off limits for use in our videos? Like the Mario coin sound, or the Pokemon "got item" sound?

Also, I'm currently using a Mac, and will be doing post-production in After Effects, and I don't believe (I'm pretty darned sure) that I wont be able to output a .avi, or a .wmv. Would a .mp4 or a .mov be acceptable or does it have to be .avi or .wmv?

Thanks in Advance.

I'm ready to ROCK some FACES this year! I'm so excited to be entering this year with such a strong pilot. I've invested in some great new equipment over this past year and, and I'm ready bump this competition up a notch in quality! Get ready to be amazepunched with bodaciousment!

Jimtopia - I've found an amazing FREE program that works on both Mac and Windows that outputs files into new formats (including among them AVI and WMV). Head over to http://www.squared5.com/ and download "MPEG Streamclip." I found it while I was trying to learn how to use my old Zi8's 60 FPS footage which outputs in an unrecognized file format for Final Cut. The original forum post dealing with it is here - http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1805338 It gets into settings they used in MPEG Streamclip which may help you understand how the program works. It will even help you re-size your video as well, so it's closer to the 200MB suggested upload size!

InventiveHero:
awesome stuff

Wow, thanks a bunch man, I appreciate the help. Good luck in the competition!

Hey guys @ the escapist. I'm working on my video entry as we speak, and it's coming together great, but I have a question.

With regards to music, can we only use public domain or original music? Or can we use small snippets of copyrighted songs. I know that Yahtzee did this for his early ZP videos

EDIT - Also, what about music from an E3 game trailer?
