4Chan Helped FBI Prevent A School Shooting ... No, Really

I just can't get over how fucked up it would be to see a shooting on Stickam. Watching multiple people die, but personally, in a way and medium that is close to actually being there. Doing it. It's just... weird.

What a weird piece of news. 4chan, who usually care more about cats than people, told the FBI about a threat of school shooting instead of exorting him to beat the 'high score', because the FBI apparently can't be arsed to read the publically available website where what they consider a terrorist group convene.

I don't know I think he may have been joking. I've seen stand ups joke about school shootings before.

There are multiple video websites devoted to uploading pictures of executions and torturing.

Yep.

Um, yay? kinda unusual for anyone to take anyone on the internet seriously, but glad that it is probably a good thing that came from that.

Sorry Escapist, I find it amusing that you say that what he said was "no joke", yet an article that was posted a few weeks back said that a man having a wii console thrown at his face, yes his ACTUAL FACE, was funny.

Does everyone the FBI arrest just happen to have child porn floating around on their PC's?

Do they plant that shit just for the luls or what?

Must... fight... morbid... curiosity....

You've noticed that too, lol. It's like "a man on got in trouble on the internet for something today. Oh, and he had child porn." It must be like some kind of requirement to join the evil people society or something.

The Random One:

The FBI doesn't have the time to read Internet forums looking for threats. That's why they have a tipline.

4Chan: A force for chaotic neutral!

Uninformed Thread Parent is Uninformed. /b/ is always nice.

Also, thank you for propagating the mistaken impression that 4chan <=> /b/. It's really great for the site's reputation, and I love nothing more than living among a swarm of innocent, yet misinformed idiots.

Yeah.

That was impressive hahaha well done. Yay for 4chan doing some good

"...on which they found more incriminating evidence and child pornography."

Can't lie, I straight up lol'd and yet was not the least bit surprised.

OT: Glad 4chan can occasionally use its scary stalking powers for good once in a while.

I hope he gets the charge reduced for the murder threats.

No, I'm seriously. I know he had child porn, and he should pay the price for that. But it sounds like his 'threats' were a joke. A sick joke, a bad joke, a joke that can't be easily distinguished from a legitimate threat- except in retrospect. It is still a crime, but degree matters in criminal law. If they find no other evidence that he ever planned to hurt anyone, he probably didn't.

The Random board (/b/) on 4chan brings violent criminals, child pornographers and ordinary folks together like no other site I know. I think hanging out there warps peoples' perceptions about consequences and what is permissible, particularly those who are not well adjusted and think they are safe from prosecution. You go there for funny pictures, but get exposed to things you would otherwise never see without seeking them out.

This is not the first time I have read an article about someone who frequents 4chan doing horrible things on the internet, even when they seem to act normally in other contexts. I am not saying that this man is not responsible for his actions or that the 4chan site is, I just hope someone brings up these potentially harmful effects before he is sentenced.

Doesn't the FBI say they find child porn on the computer of everyone they raid, so they don't look like idiots and have to say, "Yeah, sorry, we raided your house cause 4chan told us to."

"If you order now, I'll throw in a child pornography charge absolutely free!"

redisforever:

I don't know. People threatening acts of extreme violence like that can be justified raiding a computer even if they get it wrong sometimes. The risk of embarrassment doesn't outweigh the risk of someone being serious.

Yeah.

LOL

Well guys, hope he has a very special place in a very small cell for a very long time with a very big BFF, stuff like this disgusts me.

And speaking of disgust, 4chan is pretty good at bringing that out of me, but now we see it might not be so bad after all.

Until I go on /b/ later and retract that statement immediately for whatever horrific image I see.

When will criminals learn you don't announce your plans of crime on 4CHAN!

The Long Road:

gim73:
If he had made a map of his school on a fps then that is totally normal.

I think your definition of "normal" needs some serious re-working if you think this is normal. This is sick.

The reality is that normal is a broader term than you might think. One of my favorite games takes place in the post-nuclear apocalypse ruins of my nations capital. As video game fans, we are much more in tune with the divide between fantasy and reality than most people. It's not like we are programming in fleeing children to be gunned down in our levels. Usually they are just simply maps for team deathmatches or some other capture the flag tom-foolery.

It's a real shame about the hyper sensitivity of a minority forces certain opinions on the majority. It's only been about 15 years since they really started going for a zero tolerance policy on underage nudity. Regular people just taking normal pictures of their kids naked were suddenly being arrested for developing kiddie porn. It's just plain stupid. I don't know anyone who DOESN'T have pictures taken by parents of bath time with brother/sister/cousin or whatever. Nobody is a victim in any of these photos, yet they are found to be on the same level as creepy uncle lester and his eight year old daughter being molested on tape. It all comes down to the concepts of nudity, shame, morality and law. You find that people will always try to force their morality into laws, no matter how absurd they are. In a binary world this might work, but that's simply not the fact. We live in a world of purples and greens, not black and white. The label of sex offender should be something serious for rapists and molesters, not high school seniors with junior girlfriends. As far as the internet goes, all girls on the internet are both under and over the age of eighteen at the same time. yeah, that's right, it's schrodingers porn. Don't get me started on hentai. Cartoons don't have an age. Used to be that it was illegal to make hentai with pubic hair because it was indecent... yeah... the porn with tenticles and girls growing a penis was indecent if they had something as naturally occurring as pubic hair. Never mind that hentai is actually japanese for pervert, if you are reading it, it doesn't really matter what age the characters are said to be. They could be ten year olds with huge tits or thirty year olds with flat chests, it's a freaking cartoon and changing the text bubbles completely changes what you perceive as truth.

Does anybody else find it a little weird that they mentioned the kiddie porn? i mean yeah, it's bad, but... a shooter would have things like guns and bblueprints and stuff... not kiddie porn.

Lol sounds like he was trying to troll /b/ and /b/ trolled him right back using the FBI.

Huh....4chan has feelings. I never knew that.

ph0b0s123:

Also since the guy is in college and child porn goes up to 18, he may have had pics of people he knows, who are only a year younger due to sex-ting, so I am not 100% convinced by that either. Most people when told 'we found child porn' say 'kill him'. I first ask what kind of child porn before saying 'kill him'.

First off, all files have a created date and last edit date and last accessed date. Just right click a file and click on properties. 2nd as far as child pornography is concern and US law. Its actual photographic deceptions of children in sexual or pornographic manner. Nude photos for scientific/ medical research or artistic nude (thin line here what counts as artistic nude with children, such as naked baby pics are okay, but not if they appear sexual in nature.) or documentation (family photos at a family-nude resort, or the stuff you see in National Geographic) is APPARENTLY acceptable. So by that definition it have to be pretty gross stuff. And most states have very stiff laws against this kind of material.

Not the first or last one, tbh.

Then there's that pedophile they caught in Canada and turned in, and they pretty much many-handedly ruined Hal Turner's life, which was totally called for.

It probably could have been a joke, the FBI take these things seriously.
On another website I go on during Obama's inauguration they went to a users house and questioned him, did things to his passport and travel information (so it was harder for him to travel to places) all because he said as a joke "Okay thats it I'm gonna assassinate Barack Obama" or something like that. Then the FBI contacted the site admin and he made a massive thread telling people not to say stuff like that.

Speaking of stuff like this on the site Newgrounds.com on the forums a user called Sirtom93 who was getting bullied at school (and he was a regular with lots of posts on the forum too) posted a thread with a picture of gasoline and matches and said he was gonna burn down his school then a moderator and user called the police in his area and they confiscated the stuff out of his locker and he was put into some Juvie/mental hospital for nearly a year and now I think he might be on probation for another year or a few months or something.

As for the child porn on this guys computer I'm not really surprised, even though /b/ has a lot of normal average people it also has a lot of creepy fucked up people too (which consists of a lot of the userbase on /b/ actually)

You know, this guy is the same as pretty much everyone on /b/, minus the common sense not to actually post threats.

I guarantee he was reported for the lulz and to teach him a lesson for being dumb enough to say something incriminating, so don't get your hopes up on 4chan caring about justice or their fellow man or anything like that.

This kind of reminds me of The Riddler. You know, leaving clues before a crime. Rot in jail, you sick bastard. High score with people, Jesus...

WHOA!! Timeout.

The FBI invaded this guy's house for a threat he made on 4chan?? If you've ever been to the site, the entire bulletin board is FULL of offensive humor and trolling. I understand how this would be offensive and even a little scary, but since when did the First Amendment not apply to the internet?

Look, if I go on a website and say I'm going to kill my f*cking boss (something we all do frequently, I imagine), how does that not fall under Freedom of Speech? I've committed no crime, other than perhaps slander. This is a sad day for America, if true.

Also, the author of this newsbyte should be ashamed of himself for a complete lack of critical thinking.

The fact that he has kiddie porn and that the threat could be real is no reason to put him in a cage, but I would very strongly suggest counseling instead of arrest. I'm no fan of arrest, I'm more of an "exile [insert sick psycho here]" fan.

4chan having some common sense is nothing new, at least for me, considering some of the biggest movements of or supported by Anonymous were efforts aimed for decency (despite some of their inexcusable, rude, and plain immature behavior {disregarding the sick, disturbing things} on the internet).

Marginal statism, don't you just love it when police do that?

People are free to say whatever they want, and 4chan doesn't exactly have a good reputation. At least he's speaking out, no matter how simple and blunt. Leave the guy alone. Nice avatar btw. A fellow Tool fan. :D

Don't get what you are on about. What I was trying to say was that even if the authorities say he has child porn on his computer, that does not shock me that much. Why? Because he is in college, so is in the 18-19 age range and child porn is a depiction of anyone up to 18. So since no-one would bat much of an eye lid if he was dating someone under 18 (obviously depending how much under), he could also have pictures of people just under 18 as well. So my point was that just cause the authenticates say he had child porn, I would want to know more than just that statement, before wanting to throw the book at him. That was all.

If it turns out he has pics of people a lot younger than he is, then it is a no-brainier.
