Teen Sells Kidney for iPad 2

Selling a kidney in order to afford a piece of tech seems a little extreme, but it just happened over in China.

Apple's iPad 2 has quickly become the must-have gadget for a lot of tech junkies. However, this story might take the cake when it comes to how far a person is willing to go to get one: A teenager in China didn't have enough money to actually buy an iPad 2, so he sold one of his kidneys to get the necessary cash.

The seventeen-year-old, known only by his surname "Zheng," apparently wanted an iPad 2 so much that he had no problem with the idea of selling an organ. Actually, he didn't come up with the idea on his own: He was surfing the Web and came across an ad that offered roughly $3,000 for a kidney.

Zheng realized that $3,000 was more than enough for an iPad 2, not to mention some other Apple gizmos. So, he responded to the ad, traveled to the hospital where the organ removal was being performed, and walked out a couple of days later with a much heavier wallet.

However, when Zheng returned home, his mother noticed his new gadgets and excess wealth. When she got her son to confess about what he'd done, she reported the crime, but it turns out that it was already too late: The private company that had been renting out the hospital rooms for the procedures had up and vanished. Authorities have had no luck tracking the responsible individuals down, mainly because all the communication with them had been done via pre-paid cell phones that have now all been deactivated.

Zheng's facing some serious long-term health issues. It's been reported that there were complications from the surgery (though what they are hasn't been revealed).

It's likely that the kidney was already sold for a substantial profit. As the Telegraph points out:

Trading organs online is a common practice in China, despite repeated attempts by China's government to stamp out the practice. Last year Japanese television reported that a group of "transplant tourists" had paid 50,000 to receive new kidneys in China.

Also, this story has quickly become an outlet for judgement in China, particularly by members of the previous generation. Basically, folks are claiming that Zheng's bad decision-making is "an extreme example of the rampant materialism of modern China."

Personally, I just feel sorry for the kid. He's down one kidney and possibly facing permanent health problems because he felt he needed a piece of technology that will likely be outdated in a year.

Honestly Escapist, my standards of peoples intelligence is just going down every single time you do a news post like this.

"Mom, I just sold my kidney for an Ipad. What's for dinner?"

I don't feel sorry for the kid at all. You know those hunting accident stories, or when a guy loses control of his car? Those are sad stories. They're pointless accidents. This wasn't an accident. The kid had plenty of time to think through his decision, and he still decided that an iPad was more important than an organ.

He should have waited 6 months for the iPad 3.

Wow. Really?

For starters, why would you have surgery performed in a seemingly dodgy environment?

Secondly, is the iPad really that good? No. No it's not. I haven't been on one, because I haven't felt the need to, so I'm sure it's really not worth a kidney.

I don't feel sorry for him as such, but I pity him in the sense that he's an idiot.

Apple consumers, the definition of stupid.

Honestly, you could replaced "iPad 2" with any other hot piece of technology and nobody would be any less surprised.

How many facepalm photos can I upload onto this thread?

Well yeah but still, Apple has a rep for making shiny things that are overpriced.

I've never bought anything Apple because I know I can get something better for less.

In short I don't pay for logos.

I wonder what he told the mom to be able to go missing for a few days.

You're all neglecting the fact a life was saved by this.

Hopefully he'll survive long enough for an app to be developed that turns the i-pad into a working kidney.

That's the worst thing I've heard today. I can't imagine crossing the mental line that justified this. Plus shady surgeries by shadowy companies just scares the crap out of me. Worst buyer's remorse ever.

And the most pathetic bit of the story is that the iPad 2 isn't even that special.

I can't even draw the energy to facepalm...

what a freaking idiot, people like that need tech rehab.

hahahaha! that genuinely made me laugh XD

anyoen want to buy a kidney? i could use some extra cash for a holiday, or to pay soem bills

The worst part is that he was totally short sold on that kidney.

An appendix would be a more suitable body part. It's just like the iPad: redundant!

Only if the kid himself survives, which is still in doubt.

What's he gonna be willing to sell to get the next model in 6 months? This is just crazy...

If this transaction hadn't been described as being so fishy, I would have seen this as a very nice story. I.e. if he had sold his kidney to someone who had needed it, then bought an Ipad. Still really creepy though...

Only thing that could be more creepy is if Apple sent the kid a replacement kidney...

I would sell a kidney for money (and $3k is no coughing matter)

I wouldnt pay for a damn iPad but I sure as hell would get something nice with the moolah!

Lono Shrugged:

And another one was possibly ruined. And no one's being held accountable.

Cool, where can I get this done? I would of course, negotiate up to 10,000 though. And to everyone about to quote me and call me stupid, I would do it.

He must have been high when this happened. No one in their right mind would have done this.

I'll save my spare kidney in case a sibling or parent ends up needing it, personally.

I certainly wouldn't invest it in a quickly outdated piece of technology.

....wha?

But... how the hell do you just FIND A AD FOR A ILLEGAL UNDERGRitOUND ORGAN SMUGGLING RING?

Is it really that easy?!

ChromaticWolfen:

He's 17. Case closed.

I think this popped up a few years ago hear uni student selling there spare kidneys to pay of there uni bills. there was some huge stupid like statistic like 1 in 77 (I wasn't paying attention at the time) and believe it or not this was before the tuition cap rise.

oh and so the mediators arn't on my ass I just wont to say I don't know how but put the same post on two threads but they were both on the same subject so no harm the same no harm done.

I'd trade my eyes for a 3D laptop. I think we all would make the same decision this kid did.

Next time he does this, he might even get a Darwin Award... for free.

What will he sell when ipad 3,4,5,6 etc. comes out? He allready sold his brain for the first one.

Guess your right. Glad I lived through being 17 without losing any vital organs.

Man, this is horrible.

He could have easily get $10,000 for that kidney.

I mean, you only have two, so make sure they sell at a high price!
