Lawyer Blames Videogames For Synagogue Bombings

 Pages PREV 1 2 3 NEXT

Hmm. Refresh my memory... what Xbox game featured bombing synagogues? Must've been DLC.

Another year, another story about someone with no background in psychology claiming video games caused some violent action, and a group of people with no background in psychology claiming video games have no ability to cause violent actions. Oh joy. Oh rapture.

So i've just finished playing viva pinata, now i feel like i need to go and bomb some synagogues because it has taken direct control of my body.

Mental health was the issue, yes games may have effected him but the mental health aspect was the real cause. Either way, he is 19 years old, and even if he didnt have mental health issues, most people know that fire bombing things is wrong. An also no the difference between reality and games we play.

Rayne870:
him and the lawyer should be put to death for the crime of stupidity.

So you want to show you dislike on the scapegoat issue "video games cause violence," by inciting violence.

That makes PERFECT sense......

Wasn't this exact defense used in an episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit?

um...Bomberman?

I don't recall seeing a game where you burn down synagogues...

I don't see how games could make a person hate jews. I gess he simply couldn't afford a decent lawyer and the guy he got was just grasping at straws, to be fair i wouldn't have an excuse for his behavior either.

Kevlar Eater:
Yeah, like video games assumed direct control of his body,

what you did there

*sigh* Remember when we all thought that this crap was over with once Jack Thompson was gone?

Those darn arson simulators, aren't they a hoot?

I assumed we made it past this. In a way at least they're progressing from "games make you crazy" to "In this particular instance an extremely violent and interactive medium may have been the catalyst that sent someone already mentally ill over the edge." Not really great but the lawyer may be trying for a sort of "This man is unstable so keep these away from him because they might make him in particular violent." Of course he should still seriously be convicted and if they're going for the insanity plea then mentioning vidoegames at all is kind of strange since he says that he was already ill in the head. So I'm on thee fence between small form of progress and underhanded attempt at petty scapegoating.

Looks like absolute desperation.

When in doubt, use a scapegoat. Just unfortunate that gaming was chosen I guess. I do hope that the bombers family aren't paying that defense lawyer much...

gigastar:
Ok can anyone name a game that promotes active violence against the Jewish?

If not that whole argument is dead in the water.

I'll name three: Ethnic Cleansing, White Law, and ZOG's Nightmare although it should be noted that these area all computer games and the accused arsonist here seems to have been an XboX gamer.

I dont know its name, but extra credits once mentioned a neo nazi game.

See above :)

yes! the best way to win an argument is to eliminate the opposition

DarkRyter:
It appears that my time machine worked. I'm in 2007.

The next president is black.

minor detail, but the next president would be Biracial, not black. It's like saying Vin Diesel is black.

Zog's Nightmare.

Think Nazi Germany, except more insane.

On consoles, specifically the Xbox, ninguno, nein, zilch, zero, none. At least not directly, only if you're playing online and someone is trolling, wich I think is 95% of the time.

OT: Heh, failed lawyer is failed, I'm glad that prick got just what he deserved.

Videogames should be monitored as a potential symptom not a cause. It just never ends...

doom mods hacked together by bored teenagers in germany don't count.

There's this... thing, but it's far too old to have been released on 360.

PBMcNair:

Andy Chalk:

"lots of meanness,"

Games now have meanness, when did that happen ?

It's from the movies, lots of meanness there. I hear reality can be pretty mean too, maybe we should limit our kids interaction with reality.

People try that, but then the government just calls everyone fat and lazy. There's just no pleasing some people.

Not sure why The Escapist even bothers putting articles like this up, seeing as how the community here is more one sided and illogical than a WBC get together.

However, this one is a little out of left field. Most of the blame for video games at least make some sort of sense.

so just another misleading title...i mean even the lawyer says the guy had a LOT of mental problems that were exacerbated by the video games.

i would like to know what video games made this guy bomb synagogues, but in the long run this guy is either crazy or anti Semitic

!שמן ממזר בן-זונה

It's nice to mention that they had mental issues, but I think the lawyer's argument probably should've been ignored after he used the word "meanness".

Overall though, their defense made sense.

Well to be fair, if you are a lawyer defending someone who torched three synagogues out of hate for jews...well he doesn't really have much of a choice does he? Other than this his only option would have been to plead insanity but there's no way that anyone will fall for that. at least the "games made me do it" had a small chance of success.

Exactly which game would he have drawn inspiration for this? Paperboy?

To be fair, that game always puts me in a fit of homicidal rage.

Kevlar Eater:
Yeah, like video games assumed direct control of his body, implanted anti-Jewish thoughts into his psyche and made him burn those buildings down.

This is doubtlessly a hate crime.

No that's not what he's saying at all, he's saying games exasperated pre-existing mental conditions that the chap is said to have. This is one of the few times where the games may have had an effect by contributing to his psychosis, it's probably not the greatest idea to allow the guy with loose grip on reality to play violent games because where we can tell the difference between fact and fiction he may not have been able to.

It's a bad sign when our knee jerk reaction is defend our hobby without acknowledging the other side has a point.

i blame gaming for bad weather and that itch on my buttocks.
you dont see nobody making news out of this. and rightly so i might add.

what is the difference between my itchy problem and this stupid pile of bs?

oh well, law system has nothing to do with law anyway, its more of "find the loophole" waldo style kind of game.
