Dark souls Vs. Skyrim Pages PREV 1 2 3 4 NEXT
Right now I'd have to lean toward dark souks. I just like the arcade / actiony feel of it once you get the controls figured out.
I'd have to go with Skyrim as I've yet to get my hands on Dark Souls. It looks great, but not particularly something I'd want to play for extended periods of time.
Personally i like Dark Souls better. I just had a lot more fun with it and it certainly felt way more rewarding than anything i ever accomplished in Skyrim. I also just liked the exploration more in Dark Souls because it was tense and exciting unlike in Skyrim where you pretty much just wander around in hope there'll be something useful around. Not really sure why i say that when i loved New Vegas and the same criticism could be applied there, but i'm guessing it's because i got Skyrim for PC when i'm mainly a console gamer. So whichever you wanna get i recommend getting it for your platform of comfort, which shouldn't be a problem now that Dark Souls is getting that PC port.
I have both at the moment actually, just curious on the communities opinion.
Skyrim is currently on PC. That alone makes t the superior game. Ask this question again once Dark Souls gets ported to PC and I have played it instead of only knowing of it's gameplay and story through Zisteau's Let's Play on Youtube of it.
Dark Souls. It's a game that totally consumed me when I thought that it would just be another filler for one of the mammoth titles to be released. The combat is far more intricate than what it seems to be at first, and it is truly a challenge to be had. As for people saying Skyrim feels like a "living, breathing world"... Seriously? I thought one of the biggest critiques about the game was how utterly and painfully static it was. Nothing you did makes any difference to anything whatsoever. Apart from a generic, bland storyline and a bunch of sites to see, there isn't really that much unless you can make your own fun, in which case I would recommend a super-duper modded Morrowind or Oblivion > Skyrim.
Hard to choose. It's like the question of whether I prefer a small delectable plate or it's worth of a slightly less but still good thing that will be larger. I'm going to have to give it to Dark Souls on this one due to the things that more fun to kill than dragons. My only qualms with it are the balance issues of endgame weapons as to where in Skyrim you could be a master in whatever you like.
Neither of them interest me in the least. However, if I was forced to choose, I'd go for skyrim. More modding potential, less difficulty, end result I'll enjoy it more.
I'm going with Skyrim because I've never played Dark Souls, and I think Skyrim is a better game overall. If you ignore the bugs that come with creating a world as big as Skyrim, you can really appreciate how impressive it is that a game as big as Skyrim exists. It doesn't matter how challenging Dark Souls is, Skyrim's world is just awe inspiring.
I prefer Dark Souls because it does the things it tries to do, better. The combat, online play and the game-feel are great, and the minimalistic storytelling doesn't get in the way. Skyrim has a huge world, which is nice, but the dialogues, quests and combat feel unfinished, and everything lacks significance, partially because you can just reload and do something else, instead of learning from your mistakes, or carefully thinking it through beforehand.
I don't know Star wars on VHS is still better than The green lantern on blu-ray.
Oh, no, I googled it and now I have to watch them all.
Dark souls 8 days a week, when I first played skyrim (first 12 hours) I thought "this is the best game ever made", and then the dragons got boring to kill, the enemy variety dropped off a cliff, and the sidequests became more of a chore than a joy. But hey, thats a bethesda game for ya Nonetheless, this thread is comparing oranges to boranges
The weird thing is that Dark Souls ruined Skyrim for me. After playing the tight combat in DS, I just couldn't bear to play with the combat in Skyrim, which is incredibly clunky in comparison. Also, I have Skyrim on PC and, what's up with the UI in it? I have to select a menu option before I can click on it? If the clunky combat hadn't been enough to ruin it for me, the PC UI would certainly have done it.
so basically skyrim is better since you played it. gotcha
you gotta admit, scaling that big ass mountain in the beginning was really cool and really immersive, but maybe thats just the grass talkin
The demon I know over the demon I don't. Not a hard choice really. Even objectively, Skyrim is more the kind of game that I would like over Dark Souls.
How is that surprising? I prefer to live on the Earth then Mars I have never lived on Mars but I almost certain that I wouldn't like it. That may be a bad analogy but I fail to see how it is a surprise that people like what they know.
And this has any relevance for a discussion on gaming how?
Glad I could be of service. ^_^
Dark Souls a hundred times over. Dark souls is simply the better game all away around. Its only failing in its lacking story is more than made up for by all the other categories in which it is superior.
Even with the admission, you fail to see exactly how bad that analogy really was. Bad. Here's a good one, a judge says to some hick which tastes better, the sushi dish in front of you, or the buttercakes your mom makes all the time. He can't rightfully have an opinion one way or the other because he refuses to try the sushi. A simple analogy, nonetheless far too complicated for such a facile concept
That something good on a bad format is still better than something bad on a good format? You can't say something is simply better for being on one console or another. Is QWOP better than journey? They are both about getting form point A to point B, but nobody prizes QWOP an artistic expertise.
Dark Souls. I was just totally in the game more than Skyrim. Dark Souls kept me playing to like New Game +++++, plus other characters.
Dark Souls isn't lacking a story in the slightest in my opinion, you just have to find it.
Yes I figured that was what you meant. However to me you can not use movies in this case as an analogy towards this video game discussion. Reason? Is despite being on different platforms movie experience does not change drastically. Whereas with video games being on PC allows for Modding of the game and (usually) superior controls. That is why Skyrim is currently better than Dark Souls. The support it gets from modding. As for your Journey compared to QWOP analogy it is also wrong in that I was not arguing over the intrinsic artistic qualities within each game. And as far as I can tell neither was the OP. He was asking for which game would be more fun to play not which game looks best (correct me OP if I'm wrong on this) thus why my answer was what it was. Also QWOP is better than Journey not in an artistic way as that is quite a subjective matter (though I think we can both agree Journey is better looking) but in a gameplay and fun level. Journey honestly is boring beyond belief. QWOP though simple is challenging due to it's different control scheme (a control scheme that only PCs can bring mind you) that forces you to try harder and harder to get the best time possible. Now I know what your thinking. But a challenge makes a game fun right? So wouldn't Dark Souls then be the better game? No. @ least not @ this moment. And that is because of my original point of not being able to modify Dark Souls which for an RPG modding is a large part of what makes a game fun and varied keeping the ability for many playthroughs for years if so desired. And also for a Hack And Slash game which Dark Souls is the controls are far superior on PC. Thus why Skyrim is currently the superior game.
Oh I just laughed seeing this on the homepage. a shitstorm's a comin'! (Skyrim. Not even fair for Dark Souls to compare.)
I've only played Skyrim and only Dark Souls let's play on youtube so you can guess which on i choose. Dark souls. Truthfully i hate skyrim, i feel overwelmed with everything it throws at me, the build choices, traveling, the skills, and all the quests. Plus combat just seems repetative for me. Sneak -> shoot in head -> hide -> repeat. From what ive seen with Dark souls, it's got fun PvP, a good challenge, and a mix of being linear and explorative, along with a ton of different stat and armor builds.
Having owned and played both extensively, I prefer Skyrim, simply because the world feels more alive, from all the npcs, to the docile enemies. Dark Souls is just too lonely for my tastes.
Although I have finished Dark Souls twice I must say Skyrim, I still play it constantly and find something new everytime. Call me easily amused, but Skyrim is just the game for me. And I still remember my first dragon in the wild, sent shivers down my spine
Between the two, i prefer Skyrim. While Dark Souls is a great game, and gives an amazing challenge like no other game out there ((shy of monster hunter, my favorite game series of all time)), the problem i have with it, is that its so linear. Thats by no means a bad thing, but Dark Souls is an Action RPG. Combat is supposed to be the most important feature to it. But Skyrim is as Open Ended as you want it to be. You can do nearly any quest at anytime, or do no quests, and just run around having a good time. Skyrim has more content all around. Its an RPG Action game. I love them both. But Skyrim is just.... More. Sure, the combat isnt as good as Dark Souls, but it makes up for it in sheer size, number of quests, and the amount of deep content. You can spend all day making jewelry, or reading books! You can travel by the road and meet interesting people your friends have never run into ((it seems like every time i start a new character, i run into the group of Drinking Dudes, by my friends who played longer then me has never met them)). Skyrim is, to me, the better of the two. They are both great in their own ways. Its just that as far as Open World RPG's go, skyrim is more open, and has more RPG to enjoy. Its bigger, and more in depth. Its got more then Combat, and thats what i want in an RPG.
There are mods that make all of these problems ( boring dragons , lack of enemy variety, UI, better sidequests [there's tons and tons of added mod quests]) a lot more manageable if you're on PC. OT: I can't really have an informed opinion on this because I haven't played Dark Souls yet, though I will if the port is any good. I love skyrim to death though and have almost 300 hours on it, so I think it's fair to say my answer will be Skyrim. EDIT: Anyone know why those links are all leading me back to this page? The URLs in my code are right...
I think 2011 was pretty balanced in terms of RPGs. You had: Skyrim - exploration, mods Dungeon Siege 3, Two Worlds 2 and Venetica also deserve a mention, and all sorts of great indie endeavors like EYE, Magicka, Avadon, Bastion, Dungeons of Dredmor, Frayed Knights. Point is, comparisons are useless. There's far too much variety in the genre.
The way i think about it is the two games are different sized pieces of bread both with the same amount of nutella on them. Dark souls is the smaller bread. Everything has a lot of depth, but there's not as many things. Skyrim is vice versa. Big bread. There are a ton of things to do, but the game is shallower and more diluted than dark souls.
skyrim has far more lasting appeal. NG+ in dark souls is easier for me than NG was. dark souls is the better game, overall though. skyrim is a great world to explore but everything about dark souls is more fun
im genuinely curious, what is so varied about skyrim? not trying to crap on your corn flakes, but to me, its just hike, kill, hike, kill.

Dark Souls has a zen to it that no other game I've ever played can quite match. Overall though, definitely Skyrim. Both are great imo.
