Mads Mikkelsen Joins the Cast of Indiana Jones 5

The fifth Indiana Jones film is hurtling towards production faster than a man being chased by a giant boulder. Last week the movie cast Phoebe Waller-Bridge as the female lead for the film opposite Harrison Ford, and today we may have the movie’s villain as Deadline reports that Mads Mikkelsen has been cast as another co-star in Indiana Jones 5. It’s not confirmed what role he will be playing, but the actor, who came to U.S. prominence playing the bad guy in Casino Royale, basically plays one role in big films like this and that’s the villain.

The fifth film in the franchise has basically been in production hell since Indian Jones and the Crystal Skull released back in 2008. The next movie was supposed to come quickly with Steven Spielberg at the helm once again, but delays added up and the film kept getting pushed — and its star kept getting older. It seemed like we wouldn’t be getting Indiana Jones 5, but over the past couple of years, momentum began to pick back up, with Spielberg stepping down from directing (but still producing) and James Mangold moving in.

With the cast coming together the movie is looking to begin shooting this summer, as Mangold continues to flesh out the cast. While the film is said to be the last in the franchise, it’s not clear what the plot will be, though with the last movie involving actual aliens maybe they’re just going to entirely jump the shark and have Indiana Jones and the Trip to the Moon or something. Whatever they do, they better get started quickly before Ford can’t even walk anymore, let alone crack a whip.

Indian Jones 5 with Harrison Ford, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Mads Mikkelsen is currently slated to release on July 29, 2022. Fans jonesing for more Jones will also be getting a new video game based on the archeologist’s adventures.
