Critical Miss: Highlanders Anonymous

You know that's just a figure of speech, right? People who use it aren't really asking if they are the only one, but are just seeking validation for their opinion.

I actually discovered this years ago when I realized all you need to be good at computer repair is a knack for search engines. If you ever have a problem with anything, odds are someone, somewhere has already had it, and bitched about it on a tech forum somewhere. It only gets really annoying when 3 posts in, the guy comments back that he figured it out himself with no explanation as to how he did it, and the mods lock the thread.

Am I the only one getting sick of everyone making 'Am i the only one...' jokes in this thread already?

And oh god yes I hate this. If you have a tech problem and solve it, POST YOUR DAMN SOLUTION. People will google you eventually.

Oh for fucks sake...

IT'S. CALLED. HYPERBOLE.

Stop being so goddamn literal.

That^
I wish people would stop going off their nut every time someone opens a thread with this.

First off, I'm sure there are some people actually asking if they're the only one because they think their opinion is that out of the norm. This is the internet after all. Secondly, there are much better ways to ask the same sort of thing that won't lead to a thread being derailed or people pointing out they aren't the only one.

Ilikemilkshake:
I laughed at the comic.. but the phrase "am i the only one..." shouldnt necesarily invalidate the rest of the question... i'd wager less than half the people who say that dont really believe they are the only one, and instead they're actually saying in a round about way: I am the only person i know who ---, do you also ---?

Or, you know, they could just ask 'who elses here ---' instead of saying something just for exaggerated effect or because they honestly think they have that special of an opinion. Many of them are ones that I would be incredibly surprised if they're even the only ones who are effected like the way they're asking. Like the 'Am I the only one not excited for' threads. Unless you only know people who love gaming or whatever else, I'm willing to bet you know someone who isn't excited for something.

Like the other guy you quoted said.. its a figure of speech and people need to calm the hell down about it. I agree that its overly used by people who really only want to draw attention because they have used a phrase everyone hates.. but seriously if people just ignored them it would go away.

Am I the only one who realises that 'Am I the only one' is obviously a rhetorical question, not meant to be taken literally? Like saying 'everyone' likes something else.

I'm not entirely sure why everyone on this site freaks the fuck out whenever someone says 'Am I the only one...?'. It's a figure of speech that's meant to elicit conversation! Jesus!

I'm going to copy an- oh wait, someone already said that.

Oh my God, Erin. Get out of my mind. GET OUT OF MY MIND

And in the end, even Duncan MacLeod was not the only one.

...It's a figure of speech. For fucks sake.

Am I the only one who thinks that anyone who uses the phrase "Am I the only one" should be shot?

...OH SHI- *bang*

THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE! Mcloud!

Let me try it another way...
I doubt I'm the only one who thinks that Erin's legs are really long here and that the close-up is creepy.
I doubt I'm the only one who might be thinking creepy thoughts about that because of obsessive tendencies.

am i the only one who doesn't really get riled up by stupid little things like this ?
oh wait the answer is "no" right ?

hang on, i think i may have broke something . . .

Jim Grim:

The issue that people take with that figure of speech here is how often it's used. It's become sort of a semi-meme on the Escapist by now, simply due to the fact that most people would word their thread titles in that way for a while - I've seen a whole load of threads which have started with "am I the only one who...". It's like whenever something becomes vastly popular and everyone starts saying it everywhere, regardless of how often other people have used it. It's just sort of frustrating to see the same phrase being used over and over and over again.

And there are also much bigger and more worthy things to get your panties in a knot about than how someone chooses to phrase a question. And quite frankly sometimes it can certainly feel like you're the only one has a certain opinion despite how much logic and common sense tell you otherwise!

The fact that this comic is called "Highlanders Anonymous" makes me think that people only post those threads for the sake of finding the other highlanders. As we all know, the mark of a highlander is thinking Call of Duty is overrated.

Screw all this debate about whatever the comic was about, look at the final hamster face!

Hell yeah hamster, you scare them out of using that crutch!

Am I the only one...ah! I get it.

At first, I didn't get the comic. But after looking at a few comments from other members, now I do.

Irridium:
I'm going to paste this comic in every "am I the only one" threads from now on.

Yes, my response to this was that exactly. Saving this one.

Am I the only one who notices that there seems to be three types of people on this thread:

1. People bawwwing because Erin called them a clown

2. People trying to make the universe implode upon itself through massive amounts of being 'meta'

3. A few of you fapping to Erin for some reason

*bookmarks comic for later use*

Am I the only one who thinks that people take this saying way too literally?

Double post...

Ilikemilkshake:

But that's the whole point, they're not raising a question, because the question is asking if they're the only one who's noticed something or if they're the only one who has a certain opinion.

In reality, most of the time the former is just a shallow way to poke fun at a game or feel special about noticing a minor detail, and the latter is just someone who needlessly thinks that the only way to share an opinion on a certain matter is in the form of a question.

Neither is particularly offensive, but it is a rather irritating way of phrasing something.

So....I'm not the only one who has giant black reptillian wings growing from his back? Well, that certainly takes alot of load off of my shoulders. Seriously, i honestly thought i was the only one that was happening too.

The only one is Neo, not you, get over it.

Utterly useless.

I apologize if that's a low-content post, but I don't feel like giving the comic any more of my time.

Tharwen:
Why is it good to point this out? Why do people do it? There are plenty of other things that you would get shouted at for taking completely literally like this, so why is this one exempt?

I just don't understand...

Dude, you've been here, judging from your join date for 2 years. Even I've figured out in my short time here that we here at the Escapist have no shortage in our reserves of stuff to get upset about. In fact, I'd argue you're in the wrong for getting so confused an not just accepting it yet.

Irridium:

I second this endeavour. Man, those things are annoying.

Zachary Amaranth:
And in the end, even Duncan MacLeod was not the only one.

Hm? I'm pretty sure that at the end of Highlander, he was the only one. The sequels never happened.
Edit: Oh wait. Duncan? Yeah, nevermind.

shoreleave:
Am I the only one who has inappropriate thoughts about Erin?

Nope. >////<

What can I say? I am into my own gender.
