Analyst Calls It: Nintendo Wins the Console War Pages PREV 1 2 3 4 NEXT
the wii may win but it still sucks. a one hit wonder. play a game, hit the thing, and wonder why you bought the piece of shit
Only Nintendo can achieve victory in battle, by hoisting the white flag and running away. Yah, the Wii sold more systems than copies of the Bible since it hit shelves. But I still believe it's a failure, overall. It sticks like glue to Nintendo strategy of releasing one killer app, and rounding it out with four or five strong games, while having the rest of it's library be utter crap. Then Nintendo bewilderingly decides that it's competing against Pop Cap rather than Sony and Microsoft. Then all of the sudden, every freaking 40-year old woman and 90 year-old grandma decides they really want to Wii bowl. So they throw away $250 on the console, or more if they went to eBay. They play the game for no more than a week, then shelve it. And it only sees the light of day on Thanksgiving and Christmas and when everyone is sick of the kids fighting and need something to shut them up. Not surprisingly, Nintendo suddenly announced it was winning the console war. That's dirty pool, Nintendo. You can't forfeit and then take it back.

Does anyone even play the Wii anymore? My cat chewed through the sensor bar wire a year ago and I've yet to replace it, not because of cost (it's only 15 buck for fucks sake) but because I just don't care to. I don't think any serious gamer would consider the Wii a "real" console anyway. I'll stick to my 360, thanks.
This. I own both a wii and A Xbox 360. I think I play my PS2 more than my Wii...
Indeed. I guess people just want to seem "cool" and "original" by junping on the bandwagon of hate. I mean, I like the Wii, even though I've only played it for SSBB in the past few months. I do want an Xbox 360, though... (I also think we should pay people for civility. Using bullets as currency.) OT: In other news, oxygen is vital for most terrestrial life. Just as obvious, yet neither statement is worth a damn.
I cry balogona. Everyone knows it will end in a draw and Kurt will say spartans never die and the nuke will blow up ending the console wars in a draw.
As some philosopher guy probably said someday... "Best way to win in a war is not to fight in one". Instead of competing for existing market, Nintendo just discovered an entirely new demographic. Voila, ludicrous sales!
Yah, but aren't we in the market for video games? Not bathroom scales, language tutors and sudoku puzzles?
Most casual games on Wii are definetly games. Simplistic? Yes. But games. Other stuff is there, but Wii Fit is not the only thing that gets sold. On the other hand, i can clearly see your point. Now let's stop here, as not to spam the thread. We can keep talking via PMs.
Eh. You have a point, I have a point. There's no need to argue endlessly over that. I will admit to some personal bias against the Wii because it was the biggest let down of my life since my ex-girlfriend. But I just don't understand the emphasis on games that can only barely be called games. At least Peggle looks like a game that could be fun in small doses. Like Benny Hill.
a console is only as good as the games for it
I Might be on a Bandwagon but my point is true I have had a Wii two years maybe three years now. I played Wii Sports maybe 5 times maximum,Wii Play twice and I did complete Resi 4 although that was because it was a good game on a bad console in my opinion.I still prefer it on my Ipod however.
Console War is not over until the next generation of systems is released. Nintendo is currently in a big decline in sales, so it seems silly to 'call it', as it were. Although I don't expect sales to flip around so much that the 360 or PS3 overtake the Wii before new systems come on the market, it's not completely impossible.
Yes, the WII will win, but it'll win the same way the other team lets the special ed kid score in a game. It's a completely empty victory, allowed to happen only because people feel bad not giving it a chance....... JUST KIDDING lol
I completely agree. Unfortunately most people here haven't come to this insight yet.
I believe that the Wii will still come out on top but at the end of this generation it's still going to be very close, which would be an accurate reflection of how balanced this generation has been.
Yeah well, when it's all said and done the best games are going to be available for either the Xbox or the PS3 - and in the end, isn't that what it's all about?
I have a feeling that "Wii HD" will be coming out next year.
kind sir, be carefull. I might just take that as a challenge. OT: agreed. and that was my uninformed rambling for this morning. time to get some breakfast.
We'll see in 2012, when the next generation comes out, who will win by outlasting the rest. Odds are that it will be the same console that won generation 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6: the PC.
I never understood that. Stick by them no matter what. They are a giant multibillion dollar corporation. They sure as hell aint gonna stick by you! They don't need your support to stay afloat.
I don't think we'll be seeing a new console for a while. and the pc won't win this round, there's too much piracy. yes, in 'console sales' it wins, but that's just because everyone needs a pc for stuff other than gaming.
So far, the PS3 seems to be doing the exact same thing the PS2 did. Ie. It has the longest starting stretch and warm up period of all the three consoles. It is finally kicking into gear, becoming affordable and actually getting good games released for it. If it will be enough, I don't know. But chances are it will survive just like the PS2 did, by being the low price long-term supported console. One thing the PS3 has going for it that neither the Wii or the Xbox360 can boast is that it picked the right format in the BluRay/HDDVD-showdown. The BluRay is the future of digital discs right now and more than one family might decide to go for the PS3 and get a game console/media station instead of just buying a pure BluRay player. The Wii is probably the winner this time around, but it is one of those hollow victories. It sold more, but both Microsoft and Sony are still on the track and doesn't seem to have any plans on dropping their gaming console-departments.
Well the same could be said for anything, like your favourite sports team or gaming franchise for example, they don't need anyone to stick with them, as long as people buy their stuff then it will be fine. But people choose to stick with them because of what they offer : entertainment value. I choose to stick with Nintendo because I enjoy their games. I'm aware that they don't need my support to stay alive, its the same with Valve for example. They don't necessarily need people to support them, but people stick with them because of the games they make.
...isn't this like saying the PS3 is the winner of the blu-ray player war? The Wii's sales aren't coming from 'real' games, so should they really be included? The only console war I still care about is how much the PS3 and 360 copy any successful feature they can find and try to get away with it.
As I must remind everyone who makes this comment, the attach rate for the Wii is higher than that of the PS3. So yes, people are still playing Wii. Don't assume because you don't like it that nobody else does.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but no it isn't. Nintendo has said multiple times that there is no WiiHD.
THIS! I own a PS3, all my friends own the Xbox360, and my wife owns the Wii. I use my PS3 almost every day, same with my friends and their Xbox360. My wife and her 3 Wii games? She played with it for a month and then it set there for over a year collecting dust in the bedroom. I even actively try to get her to find something interesting in the game shop when she goes with me but she has lost interest. Her MOM just bought a Wii this thanksgiving and I'm sure when I go to her house next thanksgiving it will have been collecting dust for the last 11 months. SO, while console sales of the Wii might somehow indicate a large active customer market, my personal experience shows otherwise. The part that bothers me about all this is that investors may look at console sales as 'potential customers' but I hope they realize that the majority of their TRUE potential customers do not buy games for the Wii, they buy games for PS3 and Xbox360 (we're talking console here, PC buzz off). This is why it bothers me that the market has shifted and that this 'war' is acting so strange this generation. Thank god Sony and Microsoft have other revenue streams to support their gaming divisions or one of them might have gotten trashed this generation. (*sigh* Sega?) I am not trying to fan any flames here, I just worry that the gaming market that I so love will buckle and dumb down to get part of this 'accessible' pie that Nintendo is hording. At least Sony and Microsoft are trying to compete this generation by making powerful consoles and full featured '7th gen' games. Nintendo made a sixth generation console on steroids with a remote control. Ultimately it will be very interesting to see where this 7th generation ends up in another 6 or 7 years.
well as long as this is based on actual numbers and it isn't pulled out of his arse! the Wii will be the secondary console that both 360 and ps3 fans have XD so sheer numbers yes they are probably the winners this generation.
Again, that is not correct. The PS3 is in dead last in terms of attach rate, then Wii, then 360.
I've tried the PS3 at my friends house I like it its nice but the controls feel uncomfortable for me to hold so I refrain from getting one and as for the Wii...I got one of thouse for christmas last year played with it for 10 minutes packed it back up and traded it in for more X-box games
I apologize for my rather opinionated statement. I do agree, based on the limited information us laymen have access to, that at this time the Wii has a higher tie-rate than the PS3, but tie-rate is a constantly changing number. As I said, I am curious to see how it will all play out in the long run for this generation.
Hmmm...Here is my take on things. I say If Microsoft market Project Natal successfully and spawn some unbelievable new and innovative gaming then it would boost the lifespan as well as the sales for the Xbox among the Wii type market of gamers. Innovative gameplay wins over graphics in this generation as the Wii has shown (its sad but true), and if Project Natal can blow our minds with some crazy things then they are going to go Microsofts way. It will also be a success among the Japanese who love such novalties. Lets hope they market and support it unlike Sega with their addons...(cough cough 32x)
Good god the game over thinker was right, this will never end, good god this is sad, you people argue about motion control, and of how the wii isnt considered a gaming console anymore while little kids argue whether super mario can beat up Sonic the hedgehog...he was right...this is fucking sad.

Sure, it's fun to joke about this stuff like "Oh yeah, Sony is God!!!" But really, who cares about this stuff besides Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo.
