Hugo Weaving, known for playing Agent Smith in the Matrix movies, is in talks to play the villainous Red Skull in the Captain America movie.
Hugo Weaving has quite the list of geek credentials, he was the best character in the Matrix movies, he played V in V for Vendetta and even took a turn in the Lord of the Rings movies as Elrond. Oh, and he was Megatron in Michael Bay’s Transformers movies, but we won’t hold that against him.
It would see that Weaving is looking to add another credit to his already impressive list by playing the Red Skull, the terrifying face of the Nazis and long-time foe of Captain America. The deal isn’t final yet, but is excited nonetheless, and goes a small way to redeeming a movie that will apparently have musical numbers.
It’s going to be great to see Captain America going toe-to-toe with his most insidious villain, and interesting to see how the makers of the movies work to Red Skull in. Sadly, we’re going to have to wait until 2011 to find out.
