If you’re looking to survive an entire expedition in Elden Ring Nightreign, then the first thing you need to do is upgrade your weapons.
Weapons are available in different rarities, and you can upgrade your way through to the highest one available. Upgrades are a costly affair, and to improve your weapons, you’ll need Smithing Stones, a reprised item from the original game. Some weapons, however, can be upgraded through special methods only.
How to Improve Weapons in Elden Ring Nightreign
To improve a weapon, you’ll need the following items:
- Smithing Stones
- Smithing Table
Smithing Tables are located beside Blacksmiths on the map, so finding them isn’t that difficult. Unlike the original game, you don’t need multiple Smithing Stones—just one will do. There are four different rarities that you will find:
- Common (white border)
- Uncommon (green border)
- Rare (purple border)
- Legendary ( gold border)

To upgrade a Common weapon into an uncommon one, you’ll need a Smithing Stone (1), while to upgrade an Uncommon into a Rare one, you’ll need a Smithing Stone (2). However, you cannot upgrade a Rare one into a Legendary weapon at a regular anvil in Elden Ring Nightreign. You need to find a Special Smithing Table at the Shifting Earth: The Crater event. Alternatively, you can also find Legendary weapons as loot drops from defeating bosses all across Limveld.
Where to Find Smithing Stones in Elden Ring Nightreign
The easiest way to get a Smithing Stone is by purchasing it from a Blacksmith in Elden Ring Nightreign. Alternatively, if you want to save your runes, hunt down cracked statues across Limveld. However, if you’re looking to open it, then you’ll need to lure a boss and have them break it for you, or you must use your ultimate ability. Unfortunately, character ultimates that don’t deal any damage cannot be used to open these cracked statues. So, if you’re playing as a Revenant or a Duchess, luring the boss is your only option.

You can also find Smithing Stones inside Tunnels. These are marked on your map by default. Whenever you find one, enter it and defeat the Troll inside. Here you’ll get a guaranteed Smithing Stone (2). When inside one, be sure to check out the side rooms within these Tunnels, as most of them contain a Smithing Stone (1).
Additionally, whenever you’re exploring towns, you’ll find a merchant who’ll occasionally sell Smithing Stone (2). So, if you’re not willing to hunt down trolls, and you’re in the mood to spend a few runes, then this is a better choice, especially if you’re looking to upgrade your weapons during day two of your expedition in Elden Ring Nightreign.
